The first full day of our visit to the UK was marked by rain – which is pretty much what I expected of England in the spring :) Although we were hiding out inside the ruins for most of the time, the birds did not mind the rain at all, as you can see from the blackbird merrily singing from the top of the tree in the centre.

Pictured here is Kirkstall Abbey, now located in an industrial section of Leeds (where Roy’s brother lives).
The ruined Cistercian monastery is set in grounds which are now a public park on the north bank of the River Aire. It was founded in 1152 and was over seventy five years in construction. It was closed on 22 November 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the auspices of Henry VIII. The abbey buildings escaped the wholesale destruction and plunder that occurred elsewhere; most were left standing and used for agricultural purposes; this is perhaps why Kirkstall is now the most complete set of Cistercian ruins in Britain. However, much of the stone was removed for re-use in other buildings in the area, including the steps leading to Leeds Bridge. The ruins have been painted by artists such as J.M.W. Turner.

Hi Silke,
You render so well the rainy atmosphere, here! I like the muted tones of trees and old stones. The composition serves nicely these ruins and makes a great interest for its history! Very well done! Annie

Hi Silke,
Dispite the poor weather a magnificent image, the colours are well saturated and these ruins are well composted. The large black frame creates a superb presentation.

Hello, Silke.

Beautiful!

The colours here are what makes this picture, in my opinion. Wonderful greens and browns that just look so natural. I can feel the dampness to.

Sharp as a pin too with wonderful detail.

I quite often think I can spot a Nikon picture - I use a Canon but I do get the impression that for scenes like this the Nikons win for natural colours. A bit like years ago when I used to shoot slide film - Kodachrome always had more vibrant colours but Agfa CT18 was the one to use for faithful greens and browns in landscapes.

And an excellent note to go with it!

Kind Regards,

John.

And you enjoyed your trip to the UK. And you are getting ready for the next stage in your adventure - wishing all the best!

This is so England Silke, ruins to be found everywhere - and of course rain - but then it's about the same weather as over here, and how else would the grass be so lovely green.

Lovely rainy picture with new green and soft blossems on the tree.

Hello Silke,
The low light somehow fits the subject, as the sun is down on both ruin and landscape!
Good point of view, impressive details...
Well composed, clever to use the wall to the right as framing!

Hi Silke

Nice rendition of the ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, & good to have you back. Take as much time off from TL, as you need. Good diffused light, so the rain helped you in one way, at least. Tfs!

Hi Silke,
Very nice combination of soft and sharp makes a gloomy day appear less so, in fact it somehow seems warm. ;0)
POV and depth all right on.
Be well, good luck,
TFS,
Wilt

Hello Silke,

The rain can't keep your camera idle!
This is a very tranquil place. Despite the rain, the ruins do not seem gloomy.
There is a air of spring vitality with the new grass and the blossoming trees.
Lovely composition and sharp exposure.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
