[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Once a very common bird the sparrow is now on the RSPB "Red List" due to rapid decline in the breeding population over the past 25 years (over 60%).

The reason for the decline is not known, though several theories have been suggested:

Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) in unleaded petrol is affecting abundance of insect for feeding young.

Autumn sown cereal crops leaves little stubble for them to forage in or spilt grain to glean.

Modern buildings have fewer holes and crevices where the birds can nest.

Taken in my garden this morning.

Using Paint Shop Pro.
Cropped the image.
Used the clone brush to remove a branch.
High pass sharpen.
Increased brightness.
Added a border.

Hello Derek,

A very good close-up of the house sparrow showing excellent details of its plummage colours and texture.
I love the diagonal composition and how well it shows up against the blurred b/g.

There was a very sharp decline of sparrows in my area but this year, there seems to have been a remarkable recovery. There are more sparrows than any other birds visiting the bird feeders. I do think more people are buying bird food to help them. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

nice capture bird man well done

First of all let me say this is a lovely composition, with excellent DOF and sharpness.
Your note is very interesting Derek, here in my location (Melbourne) my wife also noticed a sharp decline in their numbers over the last few years. I thought she was imagining it, until I paid closer attention and had to agree with her. We would have large numbers in our backyard and they have virtually all disappeared. The only place I saw them was around shopping areas where they would scavenge for food.
It has only been in the last few months that we now see an occasional one return to our yard.
What you are observing maybe be a global trend (MTBE perhaps??).

Hi Derek,
Nice shot, well composed with nice details, this chap looks like he has just come from a feast of bread on the birdtable by the crumbs on the beak.
Well done
Regards Andy

Nice shot, and interesting information. So the unleaded is also not quite an inoffensive stuff...
