The sound of Church Bells
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Taken using flash, inside the tower of our local parish church, this shows one of the old bells. The frame that holds the bells is now very weak, and would be ruinously expensive to replace. The bells can no longer be safely rung by the proper method. One of them can be chimed however - pulling on a rope causing a hammer to strike the rim of the bell.
I have previously posted a picture of the outside of the church here.
The original flash image is very flat, and I had to do quite a bit of PP.
Taken as JPEG: PP in PS7 and FastStone. |

Hello Peter,
what a lovely bell. Nice and sharp with good colour. Pity it had to be so centrally placed but I don't suppose you could do much else.
regards
Bev

Hello, Peter.
I love this one. This is a beautiful bell and the colours in it, as well as in the wood and stonework around it, are superb. Pin-sharp too. Considering that it has been taken using flash, the exposure is very well done.
Your note is really saddening. That these poor bells can no longer proudly ring out as they were intended but now have to be content to be struck by a weedy hammer. What a shame that the fabric of the belltower can't be restored!
Incidentally, what is the inscription on the bell? Do you know how old it is? Here in Lanark, we are supposed to have the World's oldest bell, it apparently having been originally cast in 1130 A.D., though it has been re-cast a few times since then, the last time having been just a couple of decades ago. I haven't seen it, but it would certainly be worth a shot.
Excellent!
Best Wishes,
John.
