Andy,
WOW. Being a nature lover and photographer, I know how difficult this shot is. Herons are usually skittish and afraid of it's own shadow.
I think you have caught it with good light and you cropped a great composition that works well. I have posted a Heron in my gallery a few weeks ago but he was just standing there, I'd prefer to have him flying like this!
