The Royal Crescent was an 18th Century speculative, entrepreneurial & commercial venture. John Wood the Younger designed this townhouse development for the newly emerging middle class that could not afford grand country mansions but sought and could afford fairly large homes in the city.

Originally some of the houses were rented out for a social season – to socially “acceptable” people only – by the floor or house. Sometimes these tenants would arrive with their entire household, including furniture, linens, carpets, tableware and all the necessities of home.

Today eight of these houses are each occupied by single families, one house is a museum, and the central two houses form a hotel.

I tried to capture the sweep of the building from this angle and show how the lawns are laid out - you might notice if you look carefully, that there is a break in the expanse of grass. This was to keep sheep from wandering all the way to the front doors of these grand homes, for the lower portion (where I am standing) was still grazing land when the houses were built. However, this wall (called a Ha-Ha) was built in such a way as to make the stretch of lawns appear continuous when viewed from the buildings above.

Tech: Captured in Raw, adjusted contrasts, levels and colour saturation slightly in raw, converted to jpg, cropped out excess lawns at the base of the picture, adjusted curves, added framing at top at bottom, resized, sharpened, and signed

Thanks for looking and enjoy the rest of your weekend in safety and good health.

A wonderful panoramic view here of these stone buildings! Love how you processed this! I like the curve (crescent) here and the colors are so vivid! What a place to visit, someday I want to hit all of Europe! What? No white specs? No white specs that are really sheep? HAHA! I meant to say sheep yesterday on your pic and just didn’t because……… half asleep! Marvelous work….so glad I harassed you into posting!

Hi Silke

Good perspective control, with superb sharpness & colour. I like the u shaped dip of the long corridor at left. Tfs!

This is a nice panoramic shot of this amazing piece of history and architecture. The detail is nice even from a distance. Excellent work in composing the shot and the color contrast between the green grass and the stone building is really nice.

Hi Silke. This brought memories to me when I lived in England in Weston Super Mare. I saw this place and the photo is a perfect representation. The composition , the curve ,vivid colors, and the framing makes it a beautiful postcard of the most prominent feature of Bath. The other notable place in Bath are the Roman ruins.Congratulations.

"Acceptable" Was that where you and Roy stayed in Bath???
Well composed image showing us the curve and the details of the building. The colours are good and I do like the whispy cloud streaks in the blue sky too.

Well Silke, you toatlly managed to capture that sweep.
So the lawnmowing sheep were stopped by that wall. I have seen a programm on Bath on television - it is an interesting town for sure.
Lovely work and presentation.
