Corfe Castle was built in a gap (Corfe is the Saxon word for gap) in the Purbeck Hills with a clear view of the sea so that it could defend the rich agricultural lands and forests that surround it.

What you see here is the ruins of the Keep of the castle. The Keep was the strongest and most secure part of a castle, often used as a place of residence by the lord of the castle, especially during a siege.

Corfe Castle has a relatively short history, spanning only about 500 years.
The oldest existing structure on the site dates to the 11th century, although there is evidence of an older fortress below the foundations of even these ruins. According to legend, it was in that older structure that Edward the Martyr was assassinated in 978 by his stepmother so that her son, Ethelred ‘the Unready,’ could take the throne.
In the late 12th century, it became one of King John’s favourite castles (and yes – that is the King John of Robin Hood Legend) and became a comfortable royal residence (as well as a busy prison). By the 13th century it was primarily a royal treasure storehouse and prison.
In the 16th century, Elizabeth I sold it to her Lord Chancellor and it became an opulent private residence. During the Civil War, it was captured by Parliamentarian forces after their second siege and it was destroyed by explosives and then undermined to ensure that it could never again be used by the Royalists.
After that, as usually happens, the ruins became a popular source for local building materials.

Hi Silke,

Those few (small) people scattered through the picture really show how impressive this Keep must have been during it's glory days.
A lovely composition and well chosen lower POV.

Hi Silke,
This historic place is so beautiful! Thanks for this informative note! I like your strong composition with the diagonale lines and in the same direction of the clouds movement. As you want suggestions, I would have removed slightly the yellow saturation in neutral colors. But this is my personal vision. Don't mind!
Bravo ! Annie

Hello Silke,

Excellent information regarding the castle.
What beautiful blue skies we had in May! You have capured this one well and made it into an excellent backcloth for the ruined castle.
Composition of thirds is in evidence here. Well Done.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

No "bad" remarks on the image. I just love old places such as this... so much history and culture... sometimes when I see this kind of ruins or any castle my fantasy starts going and I try to think of all the things that happend in a place like this.........

Cheers!

At first I had my doubts about the left part of the picture, Silke; it seems the black hole near the edge was a bit distracting, so I thought of cropping closer.
Then I noticed the clouds that somehow seem to "follow" the same angle as the slope in the wall, and that sort of makes me see the use of that bit of wall on the left...
A nice view, a little underexposed I think, but I like that. Excellently saturated colours.

Hi Silke..wonderful composition..great tones and details.

Hello Silke,

A well balanced composition with the ancient ruin, couldn't see it used to be a castle unless you told..!
The fine light makes the colours come out well, they are very lively and with fine richness...
