Hi Folks... Ive been away from Treklens for some time, having just returned from a 3 month holiday in Uk and Europe..travelling for 3 weeks to 10 countries in Europe and spending 8 weeks in Britain..which we throughly enjoyed, exploring the Uk by car and meeting with friends and relatives.

So here I am back to good old little New Zealand...well maybe not that old considering the OLD (ancient) I have seen lately! :-)

Here we have Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, an absolutely stunning place.

Some info:

Situated high on the cliff east of Whitby town centre, the ruins of Whitby Abbey are the town's iconic emblem. Although the first Abbey recorded here was in 657 AD, which originally contained the shrine of St Hilda, the founder of the Abbey and Northumbrian royal who died in 680 AD, the ruins you see today date from around 1220 AD. Whitby Abbey is particularly renowned for its links with the first of the Saxon poets - Caedmon who lived and worked here.

Welcome back, Cuzzy! And a lovely pic to return with...the Dracula connection with Whitby is an interesting one as well.

Looking forward to seeing more of your trip pics and reading about your adventures!

This one is well composed, good details and the glipmse of the bay and cliff in the distance add a nice perspective. An attractive shot, and once again, welcome back! ;-)

Stunning! I would have loved to have seen it with the sun low on the horizon, or some brooding, dark weather. The curse of a photographer, always wishing for bad weather.

Yes, I am so pleased to see you back here in Aotearoa Dawn.

Kia ora Awatea,
Ha-ere Mai!
Ev'ry-thing is ka pai!
You're here at last,
You're really here at last.
Pake, pake, pake.

And good to see one of your ancestral homes here. The ruins look so good and it's built on a cliff like you have at Manly.

Janice

Hi Dawn,
What a surprice to see you back! Good oll England he! A perfect composition here, a fine exposure of this very special cathedral.
Kia ora, hope to meet you in New Zealand!
Hans

Hi Dawn,
Great shot of this old Abbey, I like the diagonal lead up the water to the building, the composition is good as are the colours, I have done a workshop as the sky looks a little washed out, hope you don't mind.
Well done
Regards ANdy

hi dawn.
i hope you managed to make it up to scotland?

this is a great pic of this legendary abbey.
excellent composition with the water leading you in to the pic.

i await your new posts with anticipation.

i have done a ws to give a different view. hope you don't mind?
Brian

Hey Dawn...
I sure hope you had a wonderful vacation!!!
From the looks of this image you sure visited some interesting places!
I love this! it's a great ruin.
I must say though the sky is very bright...Now I'm not sure about your camera... can you use filters on your lens??
Coz if so, it would be nice to buy/use a SND grey filter. the filter is a gradient grey, that darkens the sky a tad, so that you can have good light settings.
You will have more contrast and color in the sky that way... very handy.
maybe you can even try a digital grey filter in Photoshop....??

Anyway.. I think this is an amazing place and the details and colors in the grass and the ruin are great!

Cheers!
Anneke

Certainly a strong way to return Dawn, excelent composition, you did very well to show the cliff in the far right.
jan

Stunning picture of a very imposing abbey. I have not yet ventured this far up the east coast even though I only live about 70 miles away. I have definately got to add this place to my list!
Thanks for sharing and inspiring.
Symon :)

So glad to see you back and to read that you enjoyed yourself Dawn - did you unearth some facts about your ancestors while in England?
Well bit by bit we will get the picture of your trip no doubt.
Indeed old gets a different meaning when you have visited England!
A wonderful composition with this imposing abbey and a view over the sea at the same time.

Hi Dawn,

Glad to see you back with this lovely image . .
Fine detail of this shot with beautifully composed . .
Interesting to see the river is going through the sea at the far end . .

Tfs,
Tjutjut

Welcome back Dawn and I trust there was no damage at your house. Excellent detail in the shot, nice foreground colour and the structure has nice tones. Oddly enough the skies here have been that colour of late, most odd,
David

PS the little camera did well!

:)

Hi Dawn..great sharpness and details..excellent composition.

Hi Dawn
So many castles and so little time when your in the UK. I'm sure 8 weeks still wasn't enough. this one is perfectly captured and wonderfully composed with the stream or pond in the FG.

Wooow, what a trip!! Have you been to Holland?? I am just curious. :)
A great photo of a beautiful castle! If walls could speak.....

Instead of the colours of the grass, the colours of the sky and the montains in the back are a little bit pale...

Hi Dawn,
I see that you enjoyed your long stay in England!Even it is late, welcome back!
This POV is splendid! You presented Whitby Abbey with a great sense of space and proportions! The foreground with the small canal leads us toward this impressive architecture so well. Despite you shot against the light, the image is very sharp! Bravo! Annie

ciao Dawn..
beautiful composition indeed!! nice details of this church.. the river increases the mood!! really a wonderful capture!! thanks
ciao Marco

Hey Dawn

Good POV, here. You managed to link the sky with the ground with the main object; the ruins.
Colours are really nice as well as the ability to 'look through' the windows into the sky.

Actually you encountered some 'real' historic building here in Europe. Just kidding, but it was always fun for us seen signs saying 'historic bridge (build 1940 somewhat)' in NZ.... :P

Best regards
