Hi Everyone,

hope you're all doing ok. Thought i'd share my very first attempt at HDR with you! I'm still not entirely sure how i arrived with the end result, but alot of tweaking was invloved!
Basically i got the original RAW file, underexposed it and then saved it as a seperate .tiff. Did this again, this time over exposing it and saving once more as a seprate .tiff.
Then i chucked all three, (the OE version, the UE version and the original) into Photomatix and played around a bit with different levels until i got a result i liked..
I'm not sure what to make of it to be honest, i quite like the effect from an aesthetic POV, but i'm not sure whether i'd use it all the time...it feels very unnatural to me...anyway, any thoughts of comments very welcome!

Nearly forgot - this is at the foot of one of the many Victorian Dams situated in the Elan Valley, Mid Wales. A truly beautiful area to explore, tucked away in the middle of endless rolling green hills..

Thanks for looking...

This is a great note. You explained really well what you did. I think the range of textures in this shot really help to see which areas of the photo are enhanced by this technique. It works far better for the stone and sky than the trees.
Interesting colour and contrast with the moss and purplish upper stone level too.
I learned what HDR is now. What do the initials stand for?
Thanks very much for sharing. I might have a go too now!

Hola Paul,
precioso trabajo y efectos,
bello ambiente e iluminación...
magníficos tonos.
saludos amigo.

Hi Paul

Personally, I think it turned out very well. It doesn't have those ghastly unnatural colours that comes with some HDRs but it's all a matter of personal preference. I have seen HDRs done by someone on my photoblog where he shows the original and the HDR works. He brings out details not seen in the original and adds vibrancy without going overboard.

That was just a bit of sharing. Your HDR is very good for a first attempt. I like the skies, the colours and contrast here. Well done, Paul.

Regards
Esther

hi Paul,
A great image! Excellent colours, details and POV. Very dynamic. The tunnel looks like an entry to a hobbit-hole ;)
Well done, congrats!

This just rocks, even if it wasn't HDR, the wide extreme angle, the cool water and stone work is amazing! I will do some attempts at HDR soon, I hope, if I can learn it! Nice work!

Excellent HDR work Paul. The detail in the foreground is amazing.
Great choice of a shot for this approach.
Well composed photo overall as well.
Nicely done.

Hi Paul. The jury is still out here regarding HDR images. Sometimes I feel there is to much information in one shot, the shots are over busy. Yet in other shots, as with yours it works well highlighting colours that would be missed in a more usual shot. Good contribution to T.L. Thanks for sharing.

Regards Phil.

Hi Paul,
Great shot and a good note on the PP work, I am not sure about some HDR shots as there is a falseness about them, this one works well with some good details and colours taken from a good POV.
Well done
Regards Andy

Hello Paul!
I like very much this effect!
Great work!
Excellent colours, clarity, detail and perspective!
Best regards!

Hello Paul, I do not begin to understand all the technical 'stuff' but the result is very good.
I like your POV.The colours and sharpness are lovely.
Well done.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Great PP work Paul !
detail looks great, the flowing water in particular, looks very appealing.
Well done.
Best regards, Daniel

Hi Paul..I like your hdr shot..I agree with you though that after you look at it for awhile it looks too unreal...almost superreal. The effect is dramatic though and I think once in a while it works....this is a good example of HDR.
