My contribution to Friday's theme.

The Orange parade: On July 12th, the Protestant's of Northern Ireland march in the Orange parade to celebrate the victory of King William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne. This battle of 1692 was between the Catholics and the Protestants. King William was actually from Holland, hence the house of Orange.
This parade is referred to as'guts and thunder' as the Lambeg drums, like the big blue one in the BG make a real noise, and are not played for refinement!! There are no shortage of these drums. In this parade there would have been over 200 drums.

This parade is part of the sectarian difficulties between the Catholics and the Protestants. A lot of violence used to be associated with the parade season, but since the peace accord the violence has really died down.It used to not be safe for a car from Ireland to be in the North during this time as it could have been torched.

As a Canadian, I was never part of this while I lived in Northern Ireland, but did occasionally get caught up in the cultural diffenences.
I had a stray cat come to the house and I named him Billy, which is a very common name in Canada--and did not think of the reference to King William, or Billy , as he is affecionately called by the Protestant Northern Irish.

Anyway, I found a home for Billy, the cat in the 'south' , or Ireland, and of course his name had to be changed. He became Liam , which is the Irish version of Billy! Liam continues to enjoy the good life in the 'south'.
And the good news, it is now safe for a car with southern plates to drive in the North during the marching season.

Joni Hi:
Amazing story - very very interesting and educational.

Good Morning - Smile (not that your image is funny) - rather it is very well composed. I smiled when I saw the image at the various heights of the people and the gentleman with the small blue drum seems to really be enjoying his time (and the big blue drum). Everyone in perfect step, as well.
Congratulations, very nicely composed and presented, my frined.

Hello Joni

A superb capture here, very good sharp stop action detail, wonderful colours and nicely balanced. Interesting notes too

TFS and for joining in the theme

kind regards Helen

Hello Joni,

Certainly a lot of legs here!
A lovely angled shot showing good perspective and lots of colourful details.

I visited N.I. last year, travelling up from Eire. I expected a passport control at the border but only realised that I had entered N.I. when the petrol was advertised in pounds instead of euros! Big changes!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your kind comments on 'Mirrored by the Canal'.
