Hi
This is my submission for this week's theme.

A cinnabar moth on a ragwort plant.

"The larvae use members of the genus Senecio as foodplants. Many members of the genus have been recorded as foodplants but for long term population success the presence of the larger species such as ragwort is needed.
The larvae absorb bitter tasting alkaloid substances from the foodplants, and assimilate them, becoming unpalatable themselves.
The bright colours of both the larvae and the moths act as a warning sign so that they are seldom eaten by predators.
Very few often survive to the pupae stage mainly due to them completely consuming the food source
before reaching maturity, this could be a possible explanation for their tendency to engage in seemingly random cannibalistic behaviour, as many will die from starvation" (www.wikipedia.org.uk)

NB - Ragwort is poisonous to horses.

Taken in auto, f 5.6, 1/320, iso 100, AWB

PP - Cropped and sharpened, colours boosted. Then desaturated to sepia, re-saturated the caterpillar, then added a 'mellow yellow' hue. This helped give the caterpillar a golden glow. Frame and Text added, resized for TL.

Thanks for looking
Cheers
Linzi

hello linzi
you have done a wonderful job here, though you have displayed the bright yellow as well but the composition is fine and interesting.

Great PP work Linz
All the yellow works well together
Sharp detail as well!

Hello Linzi
This looks such a 'sunny' image. The yellow tone is so bright, and the cinnabar caterpillar looks really happy on the Ragwort.
Ragwort is a noxious weed here in NZ - and I see it all over some of the fields here and have never got close to it. It is really quite pretty.

wow, very interesting macro shot tfs-jon

Hello Linzi,

What a great shot of the caterpiller on the ragwort. They are sharp, detailed and certainly fit the theme!
Lovely composition with the flowers anchoring the r/h side whilst the focussed caterpillar is nicely off-centre.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Last year, I found lots of these caterpillars; this year there have been none. I've also seen very few butterflies - only the white veined and a few large whites!

beautiful flower, beautiful caterpillar, both are in a very nice yellow and yellowish tone.

hello Linzi,
this is a really nice contribution to the theme.I like the mellow tones of flowers and background contrasted with the bold stripes of the caterpillar.
Bev

Hi Linzi,
Wonderful job, with wonderful colors and light.
Congratulations,
Amadeu

Hi Linzi,

Great image, very sharpe and very interesting light. Love the depth you have, and the interest across the frame. Well done, a great contribution to the theme,

Regards,

John

Linzi,
I'm not generally a big fan of "creative colour balances" (!) - but this one's pretty effective, and the shot's got enough detail to carry off just about anything.
I think I'd like it just as much - maybe more - without the cinnabar! But I'm funny like that!

Regards
Colin

Hello Linzi

OH WOW! this is really stunning. I Love the soft yellow tones and feel if the BG and the contrast against the cinnebar Larvae is amazing. Not just colour contrast but the sharpness and detail in the Larvae gives additional depth. A really wonderful capture here

TFS and for joining in the theme

Kind regards Helen

Very good macro shot - the caterpillar is sharp and th colours are vibrant. I like the way that the black bands of the caterpillar contrast against the ragwort flowers.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

I couldn't resist checking this one out Linzi ... who could ?
Its a stunning piece of work.
Sharp where it counts and beautifully composed, this gives us a great look at the caterpillar in its natural habitat.
Don't think I've seen this species in NZ but we certainly have our fair share of ragwort.
Cheers
Steve
