[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Took this image of Scott's view yesterday when out for a drive in the Scottish Borders.

This scenic view is known world-wide.

The view of the Eildon Hills from Bemersyde was one of Sir Walter Scott’s favourite views of his beloved Borderland. It is said that the horse pulling the hearse taking him to his interment at Dryburgh Abbey stopped at this spot, as it usually did on its daily outings with Sir Walter aboard.

My first attempt at processing an image using HDR.
Took 9 images and processed these using Photomatix.
Basically muddled through using default settings of the software.
Resized for TL.
Added a border.

Any hints and tips on using HDR or recommendations on alternative software gratefully received.

Hello, Derek.

Another fine impressive shot with wonderful colours and contrasts. I love that sky with the gradation from light to dark across the frame. And an interesting and informative note too.

Incidentally, have you seen this picture taken by one of my favourites on TE, Dougie Johnston? This one was taken on film with a medium-format camera. Peter (chefcop) also posted a picture, not dissimilar to yours, on TL very recently.

How are you enjoying your nice new full-frame camera? Do you notice a real difference in image quality?

Best Wishes,

John.

Hi Derek
wonderful view.
beautiful colors.
great composition of land and sky.
I like the mountains' peaks at the distant.
greetings

Hi Derek, this is a super view.
My only nit is that the horizon is practically in the centre of the image. I would move the horizon line to the higher third by cropping off some of the sky. Or you could crop out the gorse at the bottom and leave the sky.
In general the Rule of Thirds looks better when it places the horizon high or low in your scenes, but rarely in the middle.
I have no idea about HDR, but the colours here look good.
Cheers
Janice

Hi Derek
excellent shot of a lovely scenic in area well done and tfs

I would sit there for hours and relax and think about how I'm lucky to live here.

Simply not a lot to say here beside... Wow. Constructive comments? normally you can but this shoot is very good. Maybe I would have chose a different frame? I don't know sorry... not a lot to say to improve this picture!

Fine result for a first attempt. HDR-s are fun to do when you have the time it takes. Regarding the technique, I learned a lot from the Outback site. I do not think you need 9 images, especially with the camera you are using. My bet is 3 exposures would be enough in all but some extreme cases. If you take a scientific approach to HDR, then have a look at Qtpfsgui tool.

I think your following me about Derek, we will have to meet up sometime. A good first at HDR.

Peter
