[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Ivy is rapidly taking over some of crosses and headstones in our local churchyard. I went to look at this cross again today - 18 months after this photograph was taken - the cross has now been completely smothered by ivy.

I'm not sure if this image can truly be regarded as bokeh - the effect has been achieved in PP, by selecting the cross and the ivy - then inverse selection, and using Gaussian blur on the background.

Taken as JPEG: PP in PhotoShop 7.

Well Peter,

you surely did a fine job with the gaussian blurring. This church looks like a very beautiful piece of architecture. Something tells me that this is a wonderful place.
What is HBW ?

regards,

Luc.

hello Peter,
good PP work as it has produced the desired effect. The interesting celtic type ? cross and ivy is nicely sharp.
regards
Bev

Well I like it, so I say it stays, lol.

The church looks beautiful! Your colors are great, very nicely and evenly saturated. More and more it seems I see pictures on here that look "bleached", just lack of pure color and they have a look to them that is almost like a haze.

I love to see one that is done just right! This is a really nice picture. Well framed, great colors, and your light balance is very even. The subject is well exposed as is the background, as opposed to the sky being blown out. (i hate that, lol)

Very nice, thank you for participating. I didnt expect to have this big of a turn out but so far its going well.

I do like seeing the ivy growing up the cross - in 12 months it should be all covered...
Good focus on the plant and cross, and a nice bokey in the BG
Well done
Janice

Hello, Peter.

This is Wonderful!

It might not be true bokeh, but it's very very good indeed and very convincing of such. This is a very fine photograph in any case, with lovely colours and good exposure and contrasts.

It is difficult to achieve good bokeh with cameras which have small sensors, even with a fairly large aperture of f/5.6. With a larger sensor, it's much easier to achieve.

I had noticed this "HBW" theme a couple of weeks ago but then I forgot about it. I must try to look out something for a Wednesday soon! This looks like good fun.

Best Wishes,

John.
