This is my take on capturing smoke.
Dean (deanosphotos) posted a series of pictures on this subject a couple of weeks ago and explained so well the equipment and technique I had to give it a go.
This isnt great for a first attempt but its a start and I shall certainly be trying more over the winter months.
Many Thanks to Dean for the idea and giving me something new to do on a cold sunday evening.
The only other shooting info is
Canon 430ex speedlite
Manfrotto tripod and head.
Stofen diffuser.
cable release
mirror
and a pack of Benson and Hedges!! |

Hi paul
Great to see the fruits of your experiment. Certainly gotta sharper feel to this than mine did, i'm thinking i've possibly been coping with a back focus problem with lens or camera. Anyway's, like that you've kept it natural but hope that you will also be experimenting, with inverting and rotaing as well as adding a little colour in there too. I'm still to do some more yet, just have'nt got round to it. TFS
Dean.
this is great
seems like x ray bones
i like its shape and oblong frame
Hi Paul,
Great attempt, I tried this myself recently with an incense stick (not as much smoke as B&H but smells better!) and found it quite hard to capture the effect I wanted. So well done. Fascinating shapes captured in time.
