| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Here, just for fun is an object I photographed while visiting friends in Cardiff. Does anyone know what it is? It was used in the early 1940's and unless you are 65 or older, you may have no idea what it was used for.
Note added April 17th:
I promised a description and here it is. The object is a World Ware II gas mask for babies. It is made of canvas and there is a draw string around the base with tapes to tie it up. The small baby is placed inside and it is sealed up with the strings and then an adult would squeeze the pump to pump air into the mask through a series of filters. Thankfully these never had to be used. Everyone in the U.K. was issued with a mask suitable for adults or children, and if a child turned up for school without it, you were sent home again to get it. I just can't imagine having to put a baby into such a contraption. This mask was in the possession of my friends who must have had it passed down to them through their family who may have had an infant at the time. Not many people volunteered a guess but only one guess came really close, that of Moketni (Mark). |

First the object??? whatever it is, is very well photographed.
It is a "thingie-ma-jiggie" only joking. It looks like some sort of mask, a gas mask maybe, or maybe an oxygen mask for pilots, or a halloween mask :-)
I will stick with a mask.
Great shot.

When I first saw this, I thought they must have been things from the war. I thought of a gas mask, but I couldn't see the face part. As for the rest I thought the grey item was some sort of sea rescue life saving device, and the blue item I truly thought was an old camp hat. Your'e right about me being too young to really recognise the items.
Great idea though. Good mystery photo, and informative.
Were you a Guider or a youth member?
I originally thought it might be an old hairdryer, the kind with the soft cap for the head...But strike that, for I think I'm wrong. Okay, I'm curious now!
