Today is a special day in the life of the small Scottish town of Annan. Today is the day of the Riding of the Marches parade. Riding of the Marches and similar events are common in the border area of Scotland. Here the marches are the borders and riders on horseback ride the borders to inspect that they are intact, an old tradition I suspect from border reiver days. These ride outs take place over several days, culmanating in today when the riders and hores parade down the town's high street. There are dressed floats of course and children in fancy dress. This stand has been constructed for this special event. After the parade there are fun activities on Annan Academy's playing fields and the pipe bands take part in a competition on the field too.At six o'clock in the evening there is a procession of massed pipe bands, my favourite part of the day.

This sounds like such a great event!!! I love all of the expression you have captured here. Very nice lighting and detail. TFS

Hello Bev,

An interesting glimpse into the moods of these people as they wait for the procession. Although the light picks out the lady on the front row (who could be an advert for BO!), the most appealing images are those of the men in fine jocular form. Actually, I found it interesting to study each face and imagine how they were feeling.
A great study, sharp and with a good dof!
It would not have been anywhere near so interesting had the people known you were photographing them!

Thank you for the notes which I found very informative.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)
