This is my husband taken this afternoon as he took up his haaf beam to fish the Solway Firth. Haaf netting is a traditional fishing method practiced on the Solway Firth here in Scotland. The beam is a construction that looks like a goal post with three legs. The net is strung over the legs and this contraption is held in a channel of water and the tide comes in and goes out.The fishermen follow the tides and can spend many hours standing in the water. The workshop shows haaf netters walking with their beams over their shoulders. Today my husband came home chilled to the bone as the water was especially cold, there being fresh down (rainwater) from the river (the Solway is estuarine) and this fresh is always cold. He didn't catch anything by the way, except perhaps a cold!
Just a few weeks ago the BBC were filming the Annan Haaf netters for their programme Coast which will be screened later in the year. Haaf netting is under threat from the weight of anticipated new legislation which will place greater restrictions on the haaf netsmen. It may not survive.

Great portrait Bev - nice to see you use such an unconventional angle and it fits all of the elements in such as his arm and the nets.

Hello, Bev.

A very fine portrait indeed, very well composed with the subject positioned somewhat diagonally in the frame and with further strong diagonal lines of the horizon and the beams of the haaf net.

Although the exposure of the main subject is spot on, it's just a slight pity that the details of the net above your husband's head are lost because of the over-bright sky. But that's just a very minor niggle.

A very interesting note too: I shall look forward to seeing your husband with Neil Oliver later in the year on "Coast" - one of my favourite programmes. In fact, I've often thought the Solway estuary to be a particularly dangerous stretch of water: the currents there look very strong - is this not quite a hazardous occupation?

Kind Regards,

John.

Hi Bev,
Nice to see your handsome husband!
Your composition with this unusual angle is effective!
I like the play of intersected lines. The diagonal makes two interesting contrasted plans. I hope that the haaf netting will survive. This is not only a craft, this is also part of your patrimony!
Very nice work! Annie

Being as I live on the prairie this is all new to me. An interesting note and workshop. I like this capture of your hubby...and a handsome one he is too :) Nice colors, I really like the green on his coat. The angle is great!!! Good detail. TFS

Hello Bev,

Great notes and how interesting to see your husband ... before we see him on 'Coast'! He looks like a star, with a twinkle in his eye!
I like how you have composed this, with the nets criss-crossing the frame at unusual angles.
The shot is well focussed capturing the details of face, clothing and nets, well.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
