[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This picture was taken at the Santago Rare Leopard Project which acts as a breeding center for these animals, some only a few hundred left in the world. When Peter James didn't have enough money to pay the veterinary bill, he came up with an idea: give close-up access to photographers for a reasonable fee. It's been a great sucess - the doctor's bill have been paid and now he's created back drops for the cages and now other breeders/conservationists are looking to do the same in Europe.

When asked if the leopards would be released into the wild, Peter James, the keeper, told me that "perhaps their grandchildren. Unfortunately, many of the countries where these cats live, they are still hunted with little or no government protection."

This day at Santago is an example of photography helping with wild life preservation for future generations. If you would like to see another picture of this leopard and more information about the project, take a look at this on TrekNature.

This image has been modified for effect (and thus inappropriate for TE or TN), though I have not painted over any areas - you can see under his eye some marks that hint he/she may have been in a brawl recently.

Hi Dan, first of all, what an excellent sharpness and only in the main object, his face, then I like the "camouflage" which you've captured in the left, then the background with brown and green colours, it's a beauty, and now have, of course, a look on TN !

Dan,this is a great capture!it looks like he wants to catch you..
good dof and good sharpness on the subject.
i like the contrast with the collors.

Wow, Dan, this is state of the art PP. I like the way you emphasized the face by blurring the surroundings. The sharpness is unbelievable.

They're beautiful animals, but unfortunately not very suited for living in captivity. There are a few of them in the Planckendael and Antwerp zoo, but when they are awake they just walk back and forth nervously.

Great shot. Excellent DOF. The look on that leopard is scary. Well framed with the branches. Great note too.

This is very well captured with excellent clarity and mystery. The cat looks serious!

Good natural framing. Dramatic composition with those partly-hidden body of the leopard. Good color contrast presented.

I really like this shot. For me, what makes the shot is the look of power on the leopard's face! It seems so natural, I could hardly believe that you were in a preservation. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent, Dan. Very sharp, great colours and lights. I also like the leaves on the left, thier blur, and see-through feeling gives a 3D impression.

Hi Dan,great shot! the light was gorgeous.Congrats.Marcello.
