Just spent a very relaxing week on the Isle of Arran, a beautiful island off the west coast of Scotland. Weather was perfect for the time of year. But today on the ferry back to the mainland it was bitterly cold.

Whilst en-route back, I saw this helicopter hovering above us. I went on deck and took a few snaps (in howling icy winds). Turned out to be an exercise carried out by the Royal Navy. They winched this guy onto our deck, released him and then winched him back into the helicopter.

It was great to watch I was just pleased I had my camera with me.

The island in the background of the shot is Arran, a must visit if your ever in this part of the world.

Hi Peter, goes to show you always have to have your camera with you and ready to shoot ! What a great capture, great view !

Am I happy to see a picture of Arran - my best friend grew up there.

Marleen

A cracker Peter taken in difficult conditions.
A good action shot with nicely captured motion blur on the rotors. TFS, Paul.

Hi Peter,

Brilliant, spectacular, excellent shot and well done on the composition.
You may have a seller, give it a try. A few more quid in the pocket. Plus, the manufacturers of the Chopper would be a worth a try as well. Now, that's double the quid in your pocket.
I'm serious, give it a try.

Mike

I like the grey/red contrast of the helicopter markings against the grey of the sea and the isle of Arran. Fantastic photograph Peter, I am going to start carrying my camera with me everywhere. Cheers G

Hey Peter, looks like you've moved into photo journalism big time. This shot is so clear and nicely composed it could be a still from some action movie. I think you were very lucky there, but you also made the most of the situation.

Hi Peter, I'm glad you have your cam with you!! :) I love this kind of helicopters!! Looks cool :) and the colours, waves, background.....just perfect :))
cheers
ToM

Right place. Righ time. Lucky to have the camera handy. Makes me want to bring mine everywhere.

Excellent action here! I like it very much! I hope everybody was rescue! I like the sea with waves and mountain give a good contrast with the helicopter!

Hi Peter,
Ooooo...nice! I've never seen one this close before. Glad you had the camera with you... Well seen!
Richard

Excellent POV and focus. Great action shot.

All the content adds up to a dramatic shot, even the sky and the sea are 'right'.
200th/sec was also right.

REally fine action photo Peter . . . good composition whilst on the run! Well done

Well captured Peter, very well done. And of course lucky you had the camera. TFS.

David

Not just a snap, it's an excellent capture, Peter. Sharpness is outstanding, colours are beautiful. That deep steel blue of the ocean contrasts nicely with the grey/orange of the chopper and the crew. I love Arran's silhouette too.
A classic rescue exercise... Belgian air force does this too, also using Seaking choppers.
TFS.

Very nice capture Peter,
Great action and very nice sense of oppotunity. VEry dynamic shot!
Lucky it was just an exercise ;)

Well done!
Take care, Stef :))

hello Peter.
At the beginning of my re-entry with the army, our camps was not far from the base of kokside where there are also helicopters of survival.
I had occasion to make a small turn with them, it is the joy.

Great shot, I am a sucker for most aviation shots, but this one is really different, You have done well to get this from a rolling deck. The colour on the sea King stands out very well against the land in the background, and boy does that sea look cold. The motion blur on the rotors ads to teh dram of the shot, I think ithe shot would have been less dramatic ifyou had used a faster shutter speed and frozen the blades, so for me you not only have captured a great shot, but the entire set up for the shot is spot on as well. This is the best shot of this type I have seen for some time. Nice :)
Andy

Great action shot Peter, it pay's to be always ready for that special shot. Very well exposed and great composition. Your timing was excellent and you have the perfect image.

Wow, great shot !!! Tu as vraiment su prendre le moment décisif, avec une parfaite maitrise du temps et de la lumière. Niveau contraste pas mal non plus dans le genre ...

Nice timing, definately in the right place at the right time. Colours and details are great. Bravo!
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Peter
Great shot! Extra colors.
Best regards
Tomek

Hi Peter, great shot, a winner. It's not often you get the opportunity for this sort of photo, it certainly looks cold in that sea. (Especially as I am sitting here with the temp a nice 90 deg F outside!)
Cheers,
Les

Excellent, Nice capture. Movement of life is here.

Hi Peter, Good clear action photo. The note adds excitement and creates the story. The man hanging on the wire looks so vulnerable. Good colours. TFS. Murray.
