The third in the series, following on from this and this.

This was the day we were due to start our journey back to Singapore - but fog led to flight cancellations so we stayed in Scotland for an extra couple of days. Taking the kids to Cramond to feed the gulls helped make up for the annoyance :-)

Mrs A and the girls dutifully stood throwing bread out for the gulls, helping me to take some shots like this.

ISO 200, f5, 1/1250 focal length 70mm

Shot in RAW, w/b adjusted, adjusted brightness/contrast and levels, cropped, jpegged, resized, sharpened.

the black-headed gulls ...
same everywhere in the world... they can fly miles for only a piece of bread...

nice shot...

Excellent shot Richard. I like the way you captured with great sharpness and clarity. Those foggy BG complimented in this shot. Excellent work.

tfs....Buddy

Low dof and excellent detail on all of the gulls look very attractive Richard. It appears that the gulls were bribed for this pose :)) thanks

Hi Richard,
amazing focus and clarity on seaguls,
i really love the excellent misty weather,
superb timing, great work,
welldone and tfs,

My son (Michaelman here on TL) just said 'this is pretty good'.. I'm inclined to agree. Sharp subjects with the out of focus background works nicely.
Composition wise - nice, but I think that the top of the bottom boat is a bit of a distraction. Maybe cloning this out would make a better image.
Nice shooting with the 'gulls though.
Cheers
DAvid

Hey, Kilted,
as awed as I have been by the last two shots in this series, the balance in this one threw me off. My eye keeps being drawn back to the boat on the left. Wonderful detail and freaking awesome stop action, but if you are not offended, I have done a workshop. (Well, I've done one whether you're offended or not..lol) Just hope you find it helpful. Many thanks and kind regards,
Shelly

excellent timing! excellent shot! the gulls are are in arc formation. wonderful action caught. the blurry bg is appropriate. well done..

Richard

What an incredible shot
Looks surreal ! sharpness is dazzling

If it were crows, it could have been a screenshot from Alfred Hitchcocks' 'Birds'

Very well done

awesome! really awesome, Richard!

it looks like a multiple exposure but this is not.

the gulls' flight order really makes a perfect sequence.
the focus and the freezing of their action in mid air are heavenly perfect!

Hi Cuz..

Nice sharpness on the gulls here..eyecathing photo, couple of things I notice, a dust bunny at top left, and the mast of the boat going up through the head of the gull. Otherwise excellent.. love that bird with his mouth open!

Cheers Dawn.

Hi Richard,
Good time... The bread and the seagulls just following it...
TFS, Marta

Hi Richard, very good composition and rendering, the sharpness and detail is amazing in this light which is GREAT for shooting. The only thing is, I keep wondering why the boats are not floating in water? Tide out? ;)

The color of the boats being white distracts from the photo, if they were dark like the rest it would have been picture-perfect or if you could have cropped them out, great. Moving the focus more to the right, I think would have been a better position from what I can see. Like any of us, it's good to think of everything in the shot when we set it up. TFS

nice capture with fine focus & sharpness
regards
jo

Hi K-A,

The sharpness of the flock of seagulls is amazing. The lighting of the wings is also nice. I do find the boats a bit distracting to the scene, but hey, they were there! :D

Again, to get one in flight is so interesting, but you certainly see some different "personalities" here!

hello richard!
wonderful scene, i like it.
excellent seagulls play.
great sharpness and DOF.

WOW! Another great one!! Perfect detail!! A nice variety of 'poses'. Very nicely framed. Have a super day!

Nice. Good sharpness on the gulls. (Gull shots are an advance on pet shots. And gulls that are actually flying are a challenge, as opposed to gulls that are just standing on the ground.)
The low cloud in the background makes an awesome natural gradient.

Hi Richard I like the details of the gulls, also their postures
as to which one should have that piece of bread, the top most gull seems the more voiceful,I wonder if he got it:)
I have a question re background,I find it a tad distracting,it really pulls my eyes away from battle of the bread, which to me is the main subject, would it have been just as good a composition if you had excluded the boats & taken it at an angle where just the birds & sea were evident?Hope you don't mind the question,it helps me learn.

Ron

Hello Richard.
Great focus on the flying gulls and wonderful b/g with blurred boats. I agree with Dawn about a mast going through the gull's head. I tried to clone it out... and I couldn't resist to to one more thing in my workshop. Please forgive me ;-)
Cheers
Wojciech

Excellent composition!
Sharp fabulous; details and present.
Even the piece of food you see ...
Congratulations!

Greetings

Hi Richard

I love the frozen action here, you have perfectly gaught the nature of these gulls. I like the DOF isolating the gulls from the BG but still showing the setting.

Karan

Hi Richard,

This is what we call 'synergy' . . Your wife throws bread and you capture the gulls . .
Very sharp image . . I still not able to capture properly flying bird . .

Richard, I am going to F1 Sgp this month end . . Need your opinion about 100-400mm lens, can It handle the race light and speed of the car? . . Aperture is not fast enough f/5.6 . .

Tfs,
TJutjut

Great DOF - the birds really stand out from the background well. The boats at the bottom of the frame are fighting the bird for the viewers attention, which unbalances the shot, but a different crop to remove them would then leave you with the issue of having masts appearing from nowhere.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Richard,
Very nice shot you have here. The sharpness of the birds are very striking. I would have preferred a BG to be in focus as well. May be a few f-stops higher?

Hi richard

Superb contrast & graphism, with perfect use of a shallow dof. Good dynamics on the gulls, with excellent repetition. The oof boats provide context, & do not bother me at all. Tfs!

OMG!! Another killer shot and another award for you Richard! How in the world did you to that
DOF?? Man! This is top notch. And I'm not just suckin up! The fact that the birds seem to "frame" the purple flowers is unreal! I love this one! The only way it could be better would be if I had taken it! LOL!

Super action shot Richard.
Those birds and bread are so sharply captured.
And I like the BG, showing us all the scenery, but in a softer way.
Cheers
