The landscape of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’.

James Herriot, from the popular books and TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ is still alive and well in North Yorkshire. The James Herriot museum (the original veterinary practice) is situated in the busy market town of Thirsk-- a very popular tourist visiting place. From Thirsk, bus tours take tourists around the area which the famous veterinarian and author covered in his travels.

Although the series was set in the1940’s, such was the inspiration of this world famous veterinarian that the museum and tours continue to be a big draw, especially with American tourists.
The veterinary practice is still in existence today, albeit in a different spot. The author’s son Jimmy was in the practice for the longest time. Not sure if he has since retired.

The country side is very charming and still holds a lot of that indefinable ‘Old World’ charm that is so difficult to replicate anywhere but in England. The area is also very popular for hiking/trekking in the summer .

On my last working trip to Yorkshire I finally built in some down time to play the tourist, and drove along the scenic James Herriot route. I was so lucky with the weather this particular week as it was hot and sunny.
The roads along the route are very narrow and undulating as they follow narrow valleys. In winter, I would imagine they are a nightmare, as any ice on the road would be treacherous. North Yorkshire gets real winter and I was told that sometimes these roads are cut off for a day or so.
A beautiful land and well worthy of all the attention. Yorkshire is one of my favorite counties in the UK.

HI Joni
The hardships of the men trying to run a farm in those days without today's equipement is almost unbelievable. They made good use of the nuisances.
A good shot of this pastoral scene

Hi Joni,
Very interesting photo and note, I can easily imagine Dr. Herriot and the Farnon brothers in work. It's great to get more infos of them, I read Dr. Herriot's books when I was younger.
Great composition with very nice colors. I love the fence lines across the photo, a pity You cropped the one on the lower part when doing the shot. Otherwise an excellent pic (if we discount it turns a very little bit to right).
Thank You very much for sharing the shot and the note, best regards from Hungary, László

Hello Joni. This is what I like about the Yorkshire landscape where you can see the pasture being divided by rock fence. Amazing scene with such a stunning view. I like the sharpness of this shot where sheep are well seen in this tall frame shot. Well done and kind regards. Jusni

Hi Jony,
What a nice country! I like the quiet mood of this rural area!
Excellent composition despite the tight foreground. This image have a good sense of space. The harvest in a field, the sheep in other, interesting rocky fence and old farm houses, all elements compose a very nice image. Thanks for the note! Bravo! Annie

Bonjour Joni,

Quel agréable vue panoramique sur cette lande anglaise!
Ces fermes séparées par des petits murets construits par la main de l'homme avec des pierres trouvées ci et là nous offrent un joli spectacle!!!
Amitiés
Odile

Nice landscape though.

Hello Joni. Excellent shot of typical North Yorkshire landscape. Good colours and clarity. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Joni
What a beautiful landscape! I love all those stone fences and the green of the whole scenery. The architecture is interesting and you cropped the image to show the traditional as well as the more modern farm buildings.
Nicely done
