Another shot of a gas well being flared after a workover near East Riffaa in Bahrain. After a well has been in operation for some time the down hole porous rock formation from where the gas is produced gets blocked up with fine sand and needs to be treated to restore production. This is done by injecting strong acid down the well to clear the pores in the rock. The well is then flared to atmosphere for a few hours so that the acids don't damage the pipework and down stream equipment. The gas is at 1200 pounds per square inch and roars with a deep booming sound as it burns. See also my earlier shot "Here there be dragons". I was about 500 yards from this one and could feel the heat!

Hi Les
That sure is a scary photo, the heat haze comming off the fire is huge. Well composed and good colours

Hello, Les.

A very dramatic shot indeed! Maybe it's my funny eyes, but those near trees look to me to be in focus - also, I'm sure that the heat will affect the air between the camera and the trees too so that will cause some distortion.

I do believe that this sort of phenomenon can occur naturally and that could explain the story of the Burning Bush - "Nec Tamen Consumebatur", as they say.

Excellent!

Best Wishes,

John.

P.S. What is a Makinon 300mm f/8 - is that a catadioptric mirror lens?

Hi Dad,

Great colours, I can almost feel the heat from here!

It is a shame the two trees in the foreground are not in focus, I like the heat haze though.

Cheers

Actually loooking again I think the trees are in focus.

Tom
