Caught this rare visitor to Bahrain on camera this evening just after sunset in our garden. 500mm lens with flash then adjusted in PS, cropped and filtered using Neat Image.
The Masked Shrike breeds from south east Europe to Asia Minor, south to Levant , east Iraq and south western Iran. Migratory to north east Africa with small numbers tp south west Arabia. It is the least common of the shrikes occurring in Bahrain with very small numbers passing through in spring from mid March to mid May. They take insects on the ground and in the air where they occasionally hover. Information from "Birds of Bahrain" by Mike Hill and Tom Nightingale. Hope you like him. Edit, 4/5/09: I used the remote shutter release and a 3 second time delay to minimise vibration. The lens is an old Sigma APO 100-500mm F1:1.56 to F1:1.8 zoom that I picked up on Ebay. |

Hello Les, Really nice shot, love the color. I don't believe we have this species here. Thanks, Dave
Don't get too many in Selkirk either Les, mind you did spot a Nuthatch recently which I think is a bit unusual.
Back to this image, its a cracker, really well captured.
