It is funny to think about the fact that the divine rays of sunshine that we often see in old paintings and sometimes are lucky to capture in photographs are nothing but dust. And the dustier the place, the more beautiful the effect. Photography was not allowed inside the monastery church of the Saint Neofytos Monastery, but I couldn't resist the temptation. And for those who are familiar with this effect, you will remember that a very particular smell of old cloth and incense often accompanies the scenery. But I suspect it will be some time before we can capture smell with our cameras and share it on the web. I wish though, that I had recorded the Cypriot orthodox monks chanting in the background, and were able to post their chant as atmospheric beackground to this shot.

Rotated, cropped, resized, added contrast, clarified, saturated slightly and sharpened - as I said it is a candid shot made in a hurry - handheld with a shutter speed of 1/15.

Excellent work hand holding at 1/15 sec. This place looks very old and I can feel the atmosphere by looking at the picture.

To this day I thought of a divine intrusion ! What a deception :(((
6This is a good composition, clear and lighted.
I like it

Nice capture, a little hot, but nice.

Excellent! I was shure it was a trick on the tumbnail, cause it's so present! Excellent shot here!

Very pretty! It's like if the chair is waiting for someone important. I like your comment as well.

PS How do you do that, making a picture this sharp without tripot and a shutter speed of 1/15??

Wow, Per, you have made dust look so beautiful. This is a wonderful capture with a great note to accompany it.
Thanks for sharing,
Liz

Exquisite shot Per. Love the light rays coming in through the window. You handled the lighting conditions very well. The note accompanying the photo is very informative. Thanks.

Dust, this tiniest of objectsan be very influencial.
As shown so beautiful here, it is also a medium that can make other phenomena visual.
It adds a special mood to this picture, apart from the nice carvings and decorations.

Nothing but Dust. Excellent shot.

Indeed, this type of rays is called "Divine Light" at least in sky photos... but I guess it for sure counts for ones like these!
Very well done Per, a perfect shot! I like in particular the diagonal lines across the photo, the pull the attention to every detail in your shot!

You're a very bad boy, Per, taking photos where it is not allowed ;o). But I'm glad you are... I like the effect very much. Very difficult environment for your light meter, but you handled it very good. Well done, TFS.

Quelle belle poussière sous cette splendide lumière! Composition divine!
Bye, Jacques

Hand held? Dust? I shall never view sunbeams through my windows the same again! This is a truly incredible composition, Per...:O)

Indeed it is funny, call them what you will, I've heard them called God rays, divine light, or for the more technical there's volumetric light or even crepuscular rays, one things for sure, they are always strikingly beautiful!

Interesting fact: although these rays appear to converge to a point, it's actually an optical illusion, just like a road converges to a vanishing point in the distance!

Excellent composition with the rays Per..beautiful capture...I'm glad you couldn't resist to take the picture .Great shot ! just a pitty about the lower part of the picture, there seems to be some oversharpening resulting in noise..tried a ws to correct that....

Very nice composition and lovely lighting.
I like you note about the incense and all...brings back memories of a similar situation I had the good fortune of witnessing on Mt. Athos

nice idea, good composition...
but, the dust it's not only in air, but also on your shot (noise)
i think would be better if you use lower ISO rating, increase the expo-time and using the tripod...
