Leptotes pirithous (Lang’s Short-tailed Blue) [in Turk. Mavi Zebra]

A small butterfly with a wingspan of 22-28 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is mauve with a dark brown line along the outer margin. The hindwing has two faint black spots at the base of a short black tail. The underside ground colour is light brown. Light-coloured wavy lines form a characteristic pattern that is similar to that of Lampides boeticus, but without the wide white band. On the hindwing, at the base of the tail there are two black ocelli, which are enhanced by metallic blue highlights and an orange surround. The upperside ground colour in the female is brown with sky-blue highlights and two dark spots at the anal angle of the hindwing. The underside is similar to that of the male.

Its range includes all the Mediterranean countries, the Arabian Peninsula and central Asia. The adult butterflies are on the wing from March until December in overlapping broods. In Cyprus it has been observed ovipositing on Medicago sativa (Lucerne) and on Alhagi graecorum of the Leguminosae family, as well as on the introduced ornamental plant Plumbago auriculata of the Plumbaginaceae family.

It was recorded in maquis, garigue, phrygana, forests, agricultural land and gardens from sea level to 1100 m. I observed this species with a high frequency in lowlands of Kyrenia district (the area between Lapithos and Tatlisu).
