Vanessa (=Cynthia) cardui (Painted Lady) [in Turk. Diken Kelebeği]

A large butterfly with a wingspan of 50-65 mm. The upperside ground colour is orange-brown with black markings. The forewing apex is black with white marks. On the hindwing there are several series of black marks parallel with the outer margin. The underside ground colour is light brown. The greater part of the forewing from the base to the apex is rose-orange with black marks. There are also white apical marks and a white submarginal line. On the hindwing, there is a characteristic pattern of various shades of brown and yellow and a series of four ocelli, with multi-coloured circular rings in the postdiscal area. The female is similar to the male.

This species has a very wide range. It flies throughout the world except South America. It is a migratory species, known for moving in colossal numbers. In Cyprus, it is on the wing throughout the year in successive, overlapping broods. There are many recorded host-plants from various families. In Cyprus, it has been observed as ovipositing on Echinops spinosissimus, Onopordum cyprium, and Ptilostestemon chamaepeuce of the Compositae family and Lavatera cretica of the Malvaceae family. The larvae live singly in a protective "tent", which they make by joining host-plant leaves together with a silken net. During the winter months, in lowland areas, pupae and large numbers of larvae, at all stages of development, are very common, especially on Lavatera cretica (Small Tree Mallow), a very common weed in cultivated areas and gardens all over Cyprus.

A common butterfly found throughout Cyprus and it was recorded in every type of habitat. As a result of its migratory behaviour it appears suddenly, as vast numbers pass northwards through the island. One such migration, in March 2001, was estimated to number many millions of butterflies. This was followed by another wave in May of the same year which succeeded in arousing the interest of the mass media.

Hi Bayram,
another prtetty lady caught by you.
Lovely and well painted in your fine shot.
Beautifully composed.

Hi Barea Bayram again,

If someone looks at Your gallery without reading Your intro, (s)he may think You're an insectologist, not a herpetologist, because You have so many insect photos in Your gallery. :) Don't take me wrong, it isn't a mistake, most of all if they're on such high quality as this one. Great playing with lights and shadows, nice diagonal compo, OK sharpness. Reminding me to my (currently) last TN-upload, only the butterfly and pebbles. But this is, by my opinion, good this way, I like minimalistic compos very much.

Tfs this beautiful shot, best wishes, László
