You almost had it perfect. In my opinion, the eye goes for the snail, and the flower is the hold...))) So to my opinion, the shelf of the snail, should have been right on focus..)))

Always pick the point of interest in a scene, was it about the flower or the snail. Using the proper focus, will dictate, what you wanted to say.
