Limenitis reducta (Southern White Admiral) [in Turk. Akdeniz Hanımeli Kelebeği]

After a long break including some trips to Turkish Thrace, Black Sea and E Anatolia I am here again. Today a butterfly which I encountered between Göynük-Mudurnu (Bolu) during my Black Sea trip. Hope you can like this!

The Southern White Admiral is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 45-62 mm. The upperside ground colour is black with blue highlights. There is a series of black and white marks in the submarginal line and large white marks in the postdiscal area. On the forewing there are also two white apical marks and one at the end of the cell. The underside ground colour is dark brown in the forewing and ceramic red with a white basal area in the hindwing. In the submarginal line there is a series of black marks. On the forewing there are white and red marks, and on the hindwing a wide, white postdiscal band. This white band is edged with a black line and is intersected by brown veins. The female is similar to the male, but is usually larger.

It is a species of central and southem Europe, Cyprus, Turkey, the Middle East and western Asia to the Caucasus.

The adult butterflies begin to emerge in April and are on the wing until October depending on the location in three broods. Overwinters as a smail larva in a hibernaculum, which it makes by rolling up a leaf on the host-plant and securing to the stem with silk.

It is recorded in maquis, agricultural land, forests and river valleys from the sea level to 1650 m, usually close to the larval host-plant (in Cyprus it is Etruscan Honeysuekle, Lonieera etrusca). In eaeh locality it is usually present only in very small numbers (one to three butterflies). Colonies with four to ten butterflies are rare. It is more common in shady locations, near springs and running water. Perches high, on tree foliage or on bushes, sunning itself with open wings. It is fond of nectar from Rubus sanctus (Blackberry) flowers, and often visits mud at springs and streams.

Another promising POV from Southern White Admiral butterfly, a powerful capture!
Superb sharpness with a shallow DOF, worked very well in the picture. The contrast between the blurred BG's colors and the natural colors of the butterfly, is great.
