*****************************

Eastern Rock Grayling (ERG) is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 55-65 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is dark brown, almost black, with a lighter-coloured broad band in the postdiscal area and a black ocellus with a white centre at the apex of the forewing. The forewing underside ground colour is dark brown. In the postdiscal area there is a pale white band and a black ocellus with a white centre at the apex. The underside hindwing ground colour is grey with a slightly lighter coloured postdiscal band. Brown shading and wavy black lines create a complicated, characteristic pattern.
The upperside ground colour of the female is lighter brown than that of the male, with a pale yellow postdiscal band on the forewing and a larger, more pronounced, black ocellus at the apex. The underside is similar to that of the male.

ERG is a species of southeast Europe, the Middle East including Cyprus, Turkey, the Caucasus and Iraq. The adult butterflies begin to emerge at the beginning of June and are on the wing until November in a single brood. Overwinters in the larval stage. Oviposits on various species of the Poaceae family.

ERG is mainly distributed in semi-mountainous and mountainous areas. Recorded in orchards, maquis, river valleys and forests, from sea level to approx. 2000 m. Frequents shady locations, resting with closed wings on tree trunks, perfectly camouflaged against the colour of the bark. Recorded in large numbers on the trunks of ancient oaks. It never visits flowers but has been recorded feeding on overripe fruit and on sap oozing from tree trunks. It often drinks from mud, near springs.

Great macro capture of the adorable butterfly with wonderful details! I like the wonderful sharpness and POV in the picture, however, eyes of the butterfly are the best part of the picture. The textures are well shown and the colors are perfectly natural.
