A large, elegant lizard with a rather short, deep head, especially in males. In adults Green lizards, total length reaches up to about 30-34 cm, tail often twice body length or more (Snouth-vent length is approx. 13 cm). Rostral plate typically does not in contact with nostrils; 2 postnasal plate; typically there are relatively big scales (i.e. plates) in temporal region, so there only a few of them. Dorsal scale number around the mid-body is between 40 and 56. The belly plates are arranged in 6 longitudinal rows, the number of pores on the lower femoral region is ranged between 14 and 21. Males usually almost entirely green with a fine black stippling above and a darker, light-spotted head. Females are very variable in color-pattern: sometimes uniform green or brown, or with blotches; frequently 2 or 4 narrow light stripes on body, which may be edged with black lines or spots. More rarely, both sexes have a bold irregular pattern of interconnected black blotches. Belly is yellowish, nearly always wifhout black spots. Throat is blue in mature males (especially chin and the sides of the head) and beige in females (rarely blue in some females). Youngs are often beige, uniform or with a few light spots (without black edge) on flanks, or else with two or four narrow light lines.

This species is generally encountered in bushy vegetation at woodland and field edges, within open woodlands, forested areas and shrubland, hedgerows, and in overgrown areas and cultivated land. It takes refuge in bushes and burrows. In northern Germany the species is confined to sandy open heathland habitats. It feeds mainly on insects, sometimes small lizards and even mice. In springtime the females lay around 5-23 eggs in a clutch. About 2 to 3 months later brown-coloured youngs appear with a total length of 3-4 cm.

It ranges from eastern Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, eastern Austria, and Slovenia, east to Romania, Moldova and southern Ukraine, southwards into the Balkan Peninsula in Croatia (including some Adriatic islands), Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and Greece (including some Aegean islands, and excluding the Peloponnese). It is also present in Turkey, where it is largely distributed in the area of Marmara and along the Black Sea coastal region, representing with a single subspecies named as L. v. meridionalis. It is found from sea level up to 2,100 m asl.
