*****************************

Black-veined White is large butterfly with a wingspan of 50-60 mm.

The upperside ground colour of the male is white with pronounced black markings along the veins. The underside is similar to the upperside. The female is similar to the male but the wings are semi-transparent.

A species of Europe, northwest Africa, the Middle East including Cyprus island and western Asia to Japan. The adult butterflies start to emerge in April and are on the wing until the end of July in a single generation.

The larval host-plants are various species of the Rosaceae family. It has been confirmed as breeding on Crataegus azarolus (Hawthorn, in Turk. Alıç) in Cyprus. It is a rare butterfly distributed in the higher areas. It is observed in forests, maquis and cultivated areas from 500 to 1600 m (rarely at sea level).

The eggs are laid in large batches on the leaves of the hostplant. The young larvae are gregarious, living and feeding within a hibernaculum, which is woven around them for protection. Larvae overwinter within this hibernaculum and complete their development the following spring, feeding on the fresh foliage of the host-plant.
