*****************************

Spotted Fritillary (SF) is a relatively large butterfly with a wingspan of 30-44 mm.

SF is very similar to its very widespread and common cousin the Lesser Spotted Fritillary, M. trivia which is it can be found sympatric in some distribution areas. But SF has a discocellular vein on the hindwing and the underside marginal spots tend to be round (not triangular as in M. trivia). However, we have to state that the SF shows rather high individual variability associated with increased ecological plasticity, the vast distribution and the presence of several generations has been the reason for the description of numerous many taxa, actually infraspecific forms. The males are usually of a very rich red that is easily seen from a distance and differentiated from the other frits. In Turkey, the nominate subspecies, M. d. didyma flies. The uppersides of the wings of the male fulvous-red; balack markings variable; the underside of the hindwing orange basal band usually continuous, black marginal spots rounded (compare to Lesser SF). In female, the ground colour of the uppersides of the wings paler, usually with some greyish suffusion.

SF is found in N. Africa, S. Europe across Asia Minor and Transcaucasia to Afghanistan and the W. Tian-Shan. The adult butterflies start to emerge in April and are on the wing until the end of September in two (bivoltine) or three (trivoltine) generations, depending on local conditions.

The larval host-plants are various species of Linaria, Antirrhinum, Plantago, Veronica, Viola and Verbascum species. Eggs laid in batches. Hibernates gregariously as small larvae, often in the shelter provided by leaves or bracts of dead flower heads of larval-host plants. Large larvae roost singly at rhe tops of grass stems. Dry grass stems and stones are favoured pupation sites. SF is a widespread and common butterfly and observed in dry flowery places; woodland or scrub clearings; meadows; dry rocky gullies; neglected or marginal areas of cultivation from the sea level to 2300 m (In Africa 2700 m).

Merhaba MF Bayram,
to me ,this one is a very complex situation to exercise a brilliant shot. the positioning is difficult with dof. You have calculated it very well and presented it with good impact. The effect is that they complement each other - one with the details on the body and the other is one the wings.
Quite fascinating to note that.
Great job well done Prof.

Foozi
