Red-backed Shrike / Lanius collurio

Overview
Red-backed shrikes are slightly larger, but slimmer, than house sparrows. The male is unmistakable with a bluish-grey head, black mask, bright chestnut back and thick hooked black bill. Shrikes like to perch prominently on the tops of bushes, fence posts and telephone wires, where they have a good view of potential prey. Items caught are then taken to a larder where they are impaled on a thorn or wedged in a fork. Its dramatic decline to virtual extinction as a UK breeding species make this a Red List bird.
Where to see them
Now effectively extinct as a breeding bird and best looked for on passage in spring and autumn. Most birds are seen on the south and east coasts of the UK as far north as northern Scotland.
When to see them
May and June, when they migrate north and from August to October when they move south.

Örümcek kuşugiller (Laniidae) familyasından yüksek çayırların, fundalıkların ve çalılık arazilerin küçük, güzel ve kahverengi sırtlı örümcek kuşu türü. Daha çok göze çarpmayacak şekilde çalılıkların yanlarında, çitlerin ya da alçak parmaklık tellerinin üzerinde oturur. Gagası oldukça kalın, başı yuvarlak, kanat uçları ve kuyruğu uzundur. Erkeği göze çarpıcıdır, başı mavi-gri, maskesi koyu siyah, sırtı pas kızılı-kahverengi, kuyruk sokumu gri, kuyruğu siyah ve yanları beyaz, alt tarafı pembedir. Dişisi daha kahverengidir, başı mat gri-kahverengi, yanak lekesi koyu, alt tarafı rimsidir ve çok ince yarımay şeklinde kahverengi çizgiler vardır. Kuyruğu koyu kahverengidir. Gencinin üst tarafı kahverengi ve koyu renk çizgili -diğerlerinden biraz daha fazla çizgilidir-, skapular tüyleri sırtı gibi (daha gri olan genç kızıl başlı örümcek kuşunda olduğu gibi daha beyaz değil), alt tarafı beyazımsı ve gri çizgili, kuyruğu koyu renkten pas kızılı-kahverengiye kadar değişir. Sesi sert; ötüşü zayıf, şakımalı ve gıcırtılı bir gevezelikten ibarettir.
