Turkey's Champion : category - longest moustaches...

In Horasan (a little town in the centre of east Anatolia, not mentioned in any guide book), there is a famous barber : Mr Kirbaç, - who has the title of « Haci » as he has been to Mecca for the pilgrimage, - has the longest moustaches in the whole Turkey : « a good 1,5m », he told me proudly. With the age, his hair is not growing so rapidly any more… If I remember well, I think that he told me also that he had once been « one of the world champions » – not sure about this…

Because of his local fame, he even had received the visit of Prime Minister Erdogan in person some years ago, from far away Ankara : a framed picture in his shop is a proof of that famous encounter, related also on the national TV ; plenty of other framed photos were exposed on the walls of the barber’s parlour, of his other meetings with various personalities that the most famous inhabitant of Horasan had received over the years.

That friendly barber shop (« kuaför ») is situated at a strategic point, not far from the « otogar » (bus station) in the centre of Horasan ; the shop is very well maintained and 3 helpers are working for him full time (one of them, holding the ends of the moustache when the champion wants to pose and show its full length).

Another feature of this barber shop is exposed in a little showcase, on the wall : a large collection of « tepsi’s », the sorts of chapelets that men play with all the time in Turkey, some of them for sale (not cheap !), some of them brought back from Mecca.

Mr. Kirbaç seemed very happy to be taken in photo, he posed for various shots in different positions and he asked me to send him a large print of the most flattering one.

Merhaba Catherine,
