Lest we forget

We recently had a short break (from the traffic in Istanbul) in the Canakkale region of Turkey and spent one day touring around Gallipoli visiting the war graves and locations of the Gallipoli campaign. This picture was taken at the Abide war memorial for the Turkish soldiers who fell fighting for their country (over 500,000). The whole experience is very moving, but can be summed up best by the words of Ataturk.
"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

Interesting and poignant photograph, my Greek wife's ancestors were refugees from here in 1922. A fine and moving quotation from Mustafa Kemal who, of course, was born in my adopted city.
Greetings from Thessaloniki
