Beyoğlu is an old region of Istanbul, and Beyoğlu’s heart beats at Istiklal Street. The street witnessed a lot of important events, especially is accepted an important route, during Mehmed the Conqurer’s conquest of Istanbul where he slided his vessels on the sledges.Today’s Istiklal Street and the neighbourhood’s first Muslim habitance was in 1491, where Bayezid II gave as a gift to Iskender Pasha who established a Mevlevi tekke there. That building is still standing as Galata Mevlevihanesi.Second Muslim building was built by again Bayezid II which was a small mosque in where at that time called as a “crossroad” (Stavrodromion). Today the building is not standing but its name still survive as a road name, called Asmalımescit Road. In the same period, at Galatasaray region a recruits barracs was built, the building rebuilt by Suleyman I. Today it is serving as Galatasaray Highschool. Thus, at the end of the 15th century in the non-Muslim region Muslim habitence began.

Cadde-i Kebir that was the Ottaman name of Istiklal Street, today’s style came to light in the second part of the 19th century. The street came to existence because of the Reforms. At that time, a lot of Ottoman intellectuals, young nobles and wealthies turned their face to the West and accepted western style life, in the meantime Levantines and European foreigners had some privileges, all these things came together thus, Cadde-i Kebir became an important center for building luxurious buildings, opening European shops, cafes etc.
In spite of wars and invasions, the 20th century was a golden era for the street. After the decleration of the Republic street’s name changed from Cadde-i Kebir to Istiklal and still survived as a center for theatres, cinemas, special restaurants, cafes, patisseries and hotels.

At the end of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century Cadde-i Kebir was such a cosmopolitan place where were spoken a lot of different languages, lived different ethnic minorities and different Levantine nationalities.

Today, it is not such a cosmopolitan place but still has a special identity and an important role as a culture, art, entertainment and gastronomy center. If we make a list of different centers at and around the street, it can easily be understood why it is still precious and important; Sweden, Russian Federation, France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, Spain Consulates; Turkish-German, Holy Book, Hachette, ABC bookstores; Beyoğlu Municipality, İş-Sanat Art Galeries; Yapı Kredi Bank Culture Center, Cervantes Culture Institute, British Council, Akbank Art Center; Karaca, Ses Theatres; Beyoğlu, Atlas, Alkazar, Emek, Fitaş Cinemas; Galatasaray, Italian Highschools, St Maria Draperis, San Antonio di Padova, Surp Voskeperan Armenian Catholic Churchs and Ağa Mosque... all these important buildings, centers and shops are the first remembrances. If we include the far neighbourhood to the list, it gets longer and longer. At the such an important center, there are a lot of restaurant choices. In one of them is Hacı Abdullah Restaurant, still standing against years and fast-food restaurants, always serves traditional Turkish meals and region’s the most important gastronomy center. Sakızağacı road is by Ağa mosque where Hacı Abdullah Restaurand stands there. The mosque built by one of the Galata Palace Agha’s called Hüseyin Agha in 1594, it was rebuilt by Mahmud II in 1834. Hacı Abdullah restaurant treats its guests who are keen on traditional Turkish kitchen with marks of respect and distinction.
