Maiden's Tower
Maiden's Tower was first built by the ancient Athenian general Alcibiades in 408 BC to control the movements of the Persian ships in the Bosphorus strait. Back then the tower was located between the ancient cities of Byzantion and Chrysopolis. The tower was later enlarged and rebuilt as a fortress by the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus in 1110 AD, and was restored and slightly modified several times by the Ottoman Turks, most significantly in 1509 and 1763. The most recent facelift was made in 1998. Steel supports were added around the ancient tower as a precaution after the 17 August 1999 earthquake. Used as a lighthouse for centuries, the interior of the tower has been transformed into a popular café and restaurant, with an excellent view of the former Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman capital. Private boats make trips to the tower several times a day. The tower was featured in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, and the film Hitman. The tower was a point on the American reality game show The Amazing Race 7. The tower featured heavily in the Turkish drama programme Kurtlar Vadisi.

Tour de Léandre
La tour de Léandre, aussi connue dans la Grèce antique et médiévale comme la Tour de Leandros, est située sur une petite île située dans le détroit du Bosphore au large de la côte Üsküdar à Istanbul Turquie. Il y a beaucoup de légendes à propos de la construction de la tour et de son emplacement. Selon la légende, la plus populaire de Turquie, un sultan avait une fille bien-aimée. Un jour, un oracle lui prédit qu'elle serait piqué à mort par un serpent venimeux le jour de son 18e anniversaire. Le sultan, pour l'écarter des terres et donc des serpents, fit construire la tour au milieu du Bosphore pour protéger sa fille jusqu'à son 18e anniversaire. La princesse a été placée dans la tour, où elle a souvent été visité uniquement par son père. Le jour de son 18ème anniversaire de la princesse, le sultan ravi qu'il ait pu empêcher la prophétie lui apporta un panier de fruits exotiques somptueux comme cadeau d'anniversaire. Cependant, un serpent était caché dans le panier et piqua la jeune princesse, qui mourra dans les bras de son père, tout comme l'oracle l'avait prédit. D'où le nom de tour de la jeune fille. L'ancien nom de la tour de Léandre vient d'une autre histoire d'une jeune fille: l'ancien mythe grec de Héro et Leandros. Héro était une prêtresse d'Aphrodite qui a vécu, dans une tour à Sestos sur la rive européenne de l'Hellespont (Hellespont est l'ancien nom du détroit des Dardanelles). Léandre (Leandros), un jeune homme d'Abydos, de l'autre côté du détroit Abydos, sur la rive asiatique, est tombé amoureux d'elle et nageait tous les soirs pour la rejoindre de l'autre côté. Héro allumait une lumière chaque nuit au sommet de sa tour pour guider son chemin. Succombant aux mots doux de Leandros, et à son argument selon lequel la déesse Aphrodite, déesse de l'amour méprisait les vierges, Héro lui a permis de faire l'amour avec elle. Cela dura tout l'été. Mais une nuit d'hiver de tempête, les vagues rejetèrent Leandros dans la mer et la brise éteignit la lumière mise par Héro, et Leandros perdu son chemin, et se noya. Lorsque la mer rejette son corps le lendemain, Héro morte de chagrin se jeta de la tour et mourra également. Le nom de jeune fille à la Tour pourrait aussi avoir son origine dans cette histoire ancienne. En raison de la proximité et la similitude entre les Dardanelles et le Bosphore, l'histoire de Leandros a été attribuée à la tour par les Grecs et plus tard, les Byzantins.
