Myra is an ancient town in Lycia, where the small town of Kale (Demre) is situated today in present day Antalya Province of Turkey. It was located on the river Myros (Demre Çay), in the fertile alluvial plain between Alaca Dağ, the Massikytos range and the Aegean Sea.

Although some scholars equate Myra with the town Mira in Arzawa, there is no proof for the connection. There is no substantiated written reference for Myra before it was listed as a member of the Lycian alliance (168 BC - AD 43); according to Strabo (14:665) it was one of the largest towns of the alliance.
The Greek citizens worshipped Artemis Eleutheria, who was the protective goddess of the town. Zeus, Athena and Tyche were venerated as well.
The ruins of the Lycian and Roman town are mostly covered by alluvial silts. The Acropolis on the Demre-plateau, the Roman theatre and the Roman baths (eski hamam) have been partly excavated. The semi-circular theater was destroyed in an earthquake in 141, but rebuilt afterwards.
Rock-cut tombs in Myra.There are two necropoli of Lycian rock-cut tombs in the form of temple-fronts carved into the vertical faces of cliffs at Myra: the river-necropolis and the ocean-necropolis. The best known tomb in the river-necropolis is the "Lion's tomb." When the traveller Charles Fellows saw the tombs in 1840 he found them still colorfully painted red, yellow and blue.
Andriake was the harbour of Myra in classical times, but silted up later on.
In early Christian times, Myra was the metropolis of Lycia. The town is traditionally associated with Saint Paul, who changed ships in its harbor. Saint Nicholas of Myra was the bishop of Myra in the 4th century, and was an ardent opponent of Arianism at the First Council of Nicaea in 325. Myra became the capital of the Byzantine Eparchy of Lycia under Theodosius II, who reigned from 408 to 450.

Myra (Demre) her zaman Likya'nın en önemli şehirlerinden birisi olarak bilinir. En erken sikkeler M.Ö. 3.yy tarihlenir. Fakat şehrin en azından M.Ö. 5.yy da kurulduğu tahmin edilmektedir. Roma egemenliği döneminde Myra gelişmiş ve zenginleşmiş şehirliler sivil projelere cömertçe para yardımında bulunmuşlardır. Sen Pol Roma'ya gitmek için Andriake Limanından hareket etmeden evvel M.S. 6.yy da şehri ziyaret etmiştir. Bizans döneminde Myra önemli bir idari ve dini bir merkez olmuştur. Piskoposluk merkezi de olan Myra'da St. Nicholaus IV. yüzyıl başında Piskopos olarak görev yapmış; halka kendini sevdirmiş, inancı uğruna çok acılar çekmiştir. Myra o zamandan sonra hep haç yollu yapılan bir yer olmuştur. Bu bakımdan Demre Hıristiyan Dünyasının her bakımdan ilgisini çekmiştir. Her yıl 6 Aralık'ta Noel Baba etkinliklerini yapmak geleneksel hale gelmiştir. Myra gibi önemli bir şehirden kalabileceği beklenen kalıntıların bir çoğunu bugün Demre'de göremiyoruz. Likya'nın en büyük tiyatrosundan kalanlar bugün ayaktadır ve bu aynı zamanda Likya'nın en iyi korunmuş tiyatrosudur. 29 oturma sırası ve 9-10 bin seyirci kapasiteli tiyatro tepeye yaslanmıştır. Bugün bile bazen festival ve oyunlar için kullanılmaktadır.
Myra metropoli muhtelif tip Likya mezarlarını önemli örneklerini ihtiva etmektedir. Tiyatro doğu ve batı metropoli diye ikiye ayrılmış ve Myra'nın arkasında yükselen kayalık, tepede kurulmuştur. Kayalar oyularak mezarlar kabartma ve yazılarla süslenmiştir. Başka önemli bir kalıntı St.Nicholaus kilisesidir. Kilise bugün 7 m. toprak seviyesinin altındadır. St.Nicholaus kemikleri kilise içindeki mermer bir mezarda bulunuyordu. Fakat bazı kemikler İtalyanlar tarafından çalınmış ve Bari'ye kaçırılmıştır. Bir Rus Prensi 1862 yılında Kiliseyi restore ettirmiş olup, St.Nicholaus Rusya'da çok kutsal sayılmaktadır. Ruslar bir kilise çanı ilave ederek kubbeyi bir ilaç tonozu ile değiştirmişlerdir. Bazı kemikleri bugün Antalya Müzesi'nde teşhir edilmektedir. St.Nicholaus çocukları, gemicilerin ve ağır işlerde çalışan işçilerin koruyucu azizidir. Bilindiği üzere de bütün Dünya çocuklarının Noel Babasıdır.
İlk defa 1904 yılında Eynihal adıyla köy statüsüne kavuşan Demre; 6 Haziran 1968 yılında 4 köyün birleşmesiyle Belediyelik; 4 Temmuz 1987 günü Kale adıyla ilçe olmuştur. İlçe 2005 yılında Demre adını almıştır.

Myra (dichtbij het hedendaagse Demre (Turks: Kaleüçağiz)) is een klein dorp bij Bucak tussen Finike (25 km) en Kas (48 km), ten zuidwesten van Antalya in de zuidwestelijke kuststreek van Lycië, Turkije. Het ligt aan de rivier de Myros (Demre Çay) in de vruchtbare alluviale vlakte tussen de berg Alaca Dag, het gebergte Taurus en de Egeïsche Zee. Aanvankelijk lag Myra aan de kust, maar door de modder van de Myrosrivier ligt ze nu 5 km landinwaarts.
Sommige geleerden stellen Myra gelijk aan de stad Mira in Arzawa. Daarvoor is echter tot op heden geen bewijs geleverd.

De datum van het ontstaan van de stad is onbekend. Er is geen geschreven bewijs van bestaan bekend voordat de stad lid werd van het Lycisch Verbond (168 v.Chr. 43 n. Chr.). Aangenomen wordt echter dat de stad veel ouder is, daar een vestingmuur is gedateerd op de 5e eeuw v.Chr.

Myra werd lid van het Lycisch Verbond in 6 v.Chr.. Strabo beschrijft het als een van de grootste steden van het verbond.
Het halfronde Romeinse theaterArtemis Eleutheria (Cybele) was de beschermgodin van de plaats. Zeus, Athena en Tyche werden ook vereerd. Voor Artemis bestond ook een cultuscentrum (tempel) dat bij een aardbeving in 141 instortte, maar later weer werd herbouwd. De weldoener Opramoas van Rhodiapolis, die de bouw van het Romeinse theater financierde, geeft in een inscriptie aan dat de tempel van Artemis de grootste en prachtigste tempel is, hetgeen ook wordt beschreven, volgens een legende, door bisschop Nicolaas van Myra.
Toen de stad door de Romeinen werd veroverd, brak de periode van het christendom aan. Paulus heeft de haven van de stad in 59 aangedaan om er van schip te verwisselen en rond 300 werd hier Sint Nicolaas bisschop van Myra. Hij bestreed het Arianisme op het Eerste Concilie van Nicea in 325. Na de scheiding van Lycië en Pamphylië onder de Romeinse keizer Theodosius II (401-450 n. Chr) werd Myra de hoofdstad van de Lycische eparchie (bisdom) van het Byzantijnse Rijk.

Storia [modifica]
Le prime notizie sull'esistenza della città risalgono al VI secolo AC, dove assieme alle città di Xanthos, Patara e Phaselis costituì una federazione di città stato. Secondo Strabone era una delle più importanti città di questa alleanza. Nel II secolo AC visse il suo periodo di maggiore splendore. Prospero centro commerciale in età romana, è ricordata come scalo nel viaggio che San Paolo intraprese verso Roma e fu in gran parte ricostruita dopo un devastante terremoto nel 141 DC.
Fu sede vescovile a partire dal IV secolo ed uno dei primi vescovi fu san Nicola, che si batté contro l'arianesimo e partecipò nel 325 al Concilio di Nicea. Divenne nel V secolo capoluogo della provincia bizantina di Licia.
Venne conquistata dagli Arabi per la prima volta nel 809, dalle truppe di Al-Rashid di Harun dopo un lungo assedio. Da questo momento la città perde d'importanza ed inizia un inesorabile declino. Nel 1087 le spoglie di san Nicola vengono traslate a Bari. Ritornata all'impero bizantino, sotto Alessio I Comneno passò definitivamente ai Selgiuchidi.
Archeologia [modifica]
Patrona della città era Artemide, alla quale era dedicato il maggiore santuario, ma vi si veneravano anche Zeus, Atena e Tyche. Le rovine della città sono coperte da materiale alluvionale, ma sono stati parzialmente riportati alla luce il teatro romano, ricostruito dopo il terremoto del 141, le terme e una basilica bizantina dell'VIII secolo dedicata a san Nicola.
La necropoli, collocata su una scogliera a strapiombo sul mare, conserva le facciate delle tombe scavate nella roccia, con colonne e frontone. Il primo ad investigare la città, l'archeologo inglese Charles Fellows (1799-1860), quando visitò le tombe nel corso della sua seconda spedizione nel 1840, le trovò ancora colorate a tinte vive: rosso, giallo e azzurro.
