I have captured this mating pair of the most rarely seen grayling during our expedition including Burdur, Denizli and Aydın Provinces around the Salda lake (Burdur) in a rocky biotope.

*****************************

A relatively rare and large butterfly with a wingspan of 45-50 mm in the male and 50-55 mm in the female.

The upperside ground colour of the male is dark brown, almost black. There is a wide white postdiscal band with two ocelli and a black line of androconia in the cell. The underside ground colour of the forewing is white with a grey-brown border and two ocelli in the postdiscal area. The underside of the hindwing is grey-brown with a wavy white postdiscal band.

The female is larger and does not resemble the male. The upperside ground colour is brown with a wide, orange-brown, postdiscal band of a deeper colour in the forewing containing two black ocelli with white centres. The underside ground colour of the forewing is orange-brown, with a grey-brown border and two ocelli in the postdiscal area. The underside of the hindwing is light grey.

Pseudochazara anthelea is a species of the Balkans, Turkey, Cyprus and northern Iraq.

The adult butterflies begin to emerge at the end of May and are on the wing until October in a single brood. Thought to overwinter in the larval stage. lt The larval host-plants are various species of the Poaceae family. It is much more common at altitudes over 1000 m. It frequents sparsely vegetated, rocky areas, resting on the ground or on rocks with wings closed. Flies low and fast and often returns to same spot from which it flew. It is attracted to the flowers of Centaurea sp., which grows in poor ground and rocky areas, in the habitat favoured by P. anthelea.
