A small butterfly with a wingspan of 20-32 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is bright blue with a thin black line along the margin and a white outer margin, The underside ground colour is grey with blue-green highlights in the basal area. On the forewing and hindwing, parallel with the outer margin, is a series of black marks outlined with white. Similar markings are present in the cell and within the discal and basal areas of the forewing and hindwing. In the submarginal area there is a series of joined, orange, triangular-shaped marks. The upperside ground colour of the female is brown with a series of orange submarginal marks. On the forewing there is a small black mark at the end of the cell. The underside ground colour is light grey-brown. The markings are similar to the underside markings of the male. In females of the first brood there are mauve highlights on the uppersides, which in some specimens completely replaces the brown colour.

Common blue is a wide-ranging species which flies throughout all Europe, North Africa and all of western and central Asia. In Cyprus, the adult butterflies start to emerge at the end of February and are on the wing until the beginning of December in successive, overlapping broods. Overwinters as a pupa. The recorded host-plants are various species of the Leguminosae family. In Cyprus, it has been recorded as laying on various species of Trifolium and Lotus, on Ononis spinosa (Spiny Rest-harrow) and Medicago sativa (Lucerne). The larvae are attended by ants whilst developing on the host-plant.

It is one of the most common and most widespread butterflies in Cyprus. Recorded in a wide variety of habitats, such as maquis, garigue, phrygana, agricultural land, river valleys and forests, from sea level to the higest point of Cyprus. It is a very common butterfly wherever Lucerne is grown. Observed to be attracted to a wide variety of flowers.

Hello Bayram,

A lovely capture of this butterfly, taken from an unusual pov which reveals the details of the upper and undersides of the wings. The focus is quite sharp all over the insect whilst the b/g has a nice, soft bokeh.
Good positioning of the subject in the frame.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Great use of shallow DOF with the head in excellent sharpness!
Nice blurred BG.
Lighting is subtle and the presentation is neat.
