A dainty butterfly perched on a beautiful Large Blue Alkanet (Anchusa azurea) flower from Mediterranean Anatolia – the around of Doglu village (Erdemli, Mersin).

Eastern Bath White (EBW)is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 35-48 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is white. The forewing has black apical markings and a single, black, rectangular mark at the end of the cell. The hindwing has a single, black costal mark. The underside ground colour is also white. The forewing has yellowish/green apical markings, two small, black spots in the postdiscal area and a small, black, rectangular mark at the end of the cell. Hindwing with a characteristic yellow/green pattern. The upperside ground colour of the female is also white. Forewing with more strongly developed apical black markings than the male, additional black markings in the postdiscal area and larger spot at the end of the cell. Hindwing with black markings in the postdiscal area and outer margin. The underside is similar to that of the male, but the black markings are larger. In the winter and early spring broods the underside pattern is dark green. In the summer broods this pattern is paler and more yellowish.

EBW is a species of central and eastern Europe, the Middle East including Cyprus Island, central and western Asia. In western Europe it is replaced by the closely related and morphologically similar species Pontia daplidice (Bath White).

The adult EBW butterflies usually start to emerge early in February and are on the wing until November (sometimes until December) in at least four generations. Overwinters as a pupa. Larval host-plants are various species of the Resedaceae and Cruciferae families. It is very common butterfly found in every type of habitat: maquis, garigue, phrygana, agricultural land, forests and river valleys from sea level to 2300 m.
