Ampexus in Hyla savignyi (Green Tree Frog)

Dear Friends, approx. two month ago I have uploaded a capture of Hyla savignyi (Green Tree Frog) from Cyprus. The detailed information of the species was given in that capture of the species. Thus, no more additional knowledge is present here (Please click on the above link to reach information given for the species!).

May be you could think that this shot was taken in a fake setting. But I have to state that this scene was photographed in wild during our night herpetological trips which we conducted in SE Anatolia. Full flash was also certainly used as it was taken at about 23.00 O’clock.
Hoping that you like this shot!

Cheers,

Bayram Göçmen

*****************************

Tree Frogs (family: Hylidae, Order: Anura) Like many of their American relatives, the Euro-Asiatic species are small, plump, smooth-skinned frogs with horizontal pupils, long legs, and disc-shaped adhesive pads on the tips of their fingers and toes. They are good climbers, usually being found in trees or other vegetation, and only rarely encountered on the ground except when going to water to breed. Tree frogs are the only European amphibians to climb very extensively. Colour can change quite rapidly and food consists substantially of flying insects which are captured with great agility. Breeding takes place at night in ponds, cisterns etc. Males have a large vocal sac under the chin and produce very loud calls. They also have small nuptial pads on the thumbs and they embrace the female just behind the forelegs (Axial amplexus). The pale eggs are laid in clumps that swell to about the size of a wallnut. The tadpoles, which tend to be solitary, have a deep tail fin extending far forwards onto the back and swim with fast fish-like movements.

During breeding season, nearly always in evening and at night, a strident, rapid 'krak, krak, krak " about 3-6 pulses a second. The call, which is repeated at intervals, tends to accelerate at the beginning and slow down at the end. Tree frogs form large dense assemblages and call from shallow water or when floating close to aquatic vegetation. Their vocal sac is blown up during bouts of singing but deflates in between them. Choruses are very noisy and can be heard from over a kilometer away on still nights and, from a distance, can sound like quacking ducks. Outside the breeding season, may occasionally call briefly from trees or vegetation during the day, especially in late summer and in rainy weather. Can also be stimulated to call by sounds that have some of the qualities of its voice, for instance passing planes.

Hi Bayram, Good to see Hermit is ensuring survival of his species. I read frogs are a good indicator of a healthy environment so look at them as a wonderful creature. TFS. Murray.
