Balloon ride

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Another shot from the balloon ride we took earlier this year over the Goreme region of Cappadocia. This shot is taken looking towards the distant town of Avanos.
In the original shot the middle ground and distant hills lacked contrast due to the early morning air conditions, but the foreground looked ok. To try and correct this I did the following in CS2
1. Created a levels layer, selected the layer mask applied a black white gradient (white at the top and black at the bottom) using the gradient tool. By double clicking the black white gradient Icon I moved the lower sliders on the gradient map to alter the amount and position of the gradient so it covered the areas I wanted. Using the brush tool with the layer mask selected I painted black over the balloon to excluded it from levels adjustment. I then adjusted the levels to correct the lack of contrast and this was applied only to areas selected with the gradient fill.
2. Created a curves layer and copied the levels layer mask to this and did a little curves work in the same way.
3. Cropped the picture to remove excess sky flattened the picture and sharpened.
4. Created a selection on the original picture using another gradient fill on a layers mask and again painted the balloon out of the selection. Then using the lens blur filter applied a very small amount of blurring to the background to make the balloon stand out more.
