This photo has been taken in the same area in Ürgüp, Cappadocia, but a little farther away - than the other ones, posted recently ; this man, Tüncay Bey, is living a few hundred metres away from the entrance of the big Kayakapi area, a huge zone that is slowly being restored (I hope, not too much in an uniform way, as this could become a sort of "Disneyland" for Cappadocia !)
Tüncay Bey has 5 children and a 6th one will come in 7 months ; I saw the smallest one, Yâsin, and all the other ones are going to school, which is a great achievement given the way the family lives ; unlike the other squats that I visited that day, their house was not very neetly kept and they are "Romali", Roma people.
No wonder then, that this man is an artist ; he earns his living by sometimes selling the poteries and cheap souvenirs that are on display around him, but the way he prefers to earn money he told me, is to play his favorite instrument, so I asked to see it : (sorry, but I am not able to tell exactly the name of this sort of "saz" - or is it an "udh", or yet something else ?) needs some repair... but nonetheless, it sounded fantastic - he has also a big, cavernous, thundering and powerful voice, as I discovered when I asked him to sing for me one of his favorite tunes.
In the past (till 2 years ago), there were many Roma families living in that area, and I had entered into caves squatted that looked more comfortable, but they had been evicted due to the proximity of the Kayakapi restoration; Tüncay's family is the only one remaining, because not so close - he told me that sometimes in the past, with neighbour friends, he would play for 3 days during wedding parties, and that he would earn as much as 500 million old Turkish Lira (some 250 euros) ; he is also sometimes still playing and singing, accompanied by his eldest son with a tambourin, in cafés downtown, but often, they are not encouraged to continue ;
Ah! Keske ! - if the guys playing in our metros in Brussels could play music with so much soul and pleasure and real nostalgia, they would have much more success - those ones are playing, as if it were a sort of routine, but most of them don't know how to play for real !
Also in this case, the house (not troglodyte, for the biggest part) belongs to the municipality, and they are permitted to living there, without paying any rent, but for how long ??? Living conditions of these people are very precarious... |
