[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Another in my series of Turkish weighlifter Halil Mutlu. A double Olympic Gold Medalist Mutlu spent 8 years as a virtual training machine at the national center in Ankara. He told me that lifting is quite simply mind over matter. This photo was taken at 7:00 pm one night. The other lifters had left the gym for the day. Mutlu wanted to break his own record and didn't care if anyone was there to witness it.

For me this is a special moment. It is when the athlete transcends mere sport and transports himself to another place where super human feats are possible.

Mutlu won Gold in 2000 and 2004. He stands 4 feet 11 inches and weighs just 56kg. He can lift more than 3 times his own weight. He still lives in a hotel in Ankara where he trains for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

I had the benefit of a 1K HMI light which a film crew had left on while Mutlu trained.

I really disappointed that this picture collect so few comments.
I think the compo and the BW used with color is really great.
The shadow makes me feel that he's not alone in the corner but he's finding himself there...

David, this is a great documentary photo. Really. One of the best I have seen. but I have to say that your notes actually put it in great perspective.
Also, about the photo, you have done realllllly good job with the lighting and exposure. The shadows are extremely well projected. It is an amazing shot. I must say, me too am disappointed for lack of comments here.
good work anyways.
regards,
Behrang

David, I have to tell you that the story you have given us is so very real. I can relate to that a whole lot. (younger days of course) You were very lucky to be there and capture him in a trance stage like. However, I would have crop or clone out the coat hanger on the right of the picture. I found myself looking at it and distracting me from the main subject. Great job pal.

Hi David !
Beautiful shot again with this athlete, I like the way you play with lines of the body, garment and central heater ... ;) and with the shadows !
Nice work !
Sylvie

Bonjour David,
