This is too dark, it is tilted, the figures are too central and there are too many distractions in the shot.

Can someone please explain why this is being praised to the rafters?

It's lovely to see you and your wife in this shot, although technically I don't think it's as good as it could be.
Perhaps if you used more zoom, or a closer crop, it would remove the surrounding context of the room - which in my opinion is a big distraction here.
Another option would be to position the sofa in front of the pot-plant and use the natural light from the windows (open the blinds first) for a clearer, brighter shot - again with the camera tripod positioned closer, or more zoom. The most important aspect of a shot like this is the faces of the people, after all, and not their surroundings.
It pays also to check details after downloading the shot, like whether a photo is tilted. An anticlockwise rotation of 1 or 2 degrees would fix this!

There are several ways to improve this shot, by using the rule of thirds and either some backlighting or diffused flash. It's very dark and hard to make out any features. The focus is good as well as the color. TFS
