My contribution to the fire theme ;) This is another wonder of nature, well worth the visit.. flames never go out even if someone extinguishes them, they will come back within a short period of time.. mythological story of the place is as follows..

Chimera has been spreading horror in Çıralı by spouting flame from his mouth. To prevent this, Bellophan ridded on his horse Pegasus -double winged horse- and killed the dragon. To memory of this he devoted a temple for Goddess Athena. According to other story, Chimera is the atelier of iron God Hephaistos.

When Perseus cut off Medusa's head, the blood sinking into the earth produced the winged horse Pegasus. Minerva (Athena) caught and tamed him and presented him to the Muses. The Chimaera was a fearful monster, breathing fire. The fore part of its body was a compound of the lion and the goat, and the hind part a dragon's. It made great havoc in Lycia, so that the king was seeking for some hero to destroy it. At that time there arrived at his court a gallant young warrior, whose name was Bellerophon. He brought letters from Proetus, the son-in-law of the king, Iobates, recommending Bellerophon in the warmest terms as an unconquerable hero, but added at the close a request to his father-in-law to put him to death. The reason was that Proetus was jealous of him, suspecting that his wife Antea looked with too much admiration on the young warrior. From this instance of Bellerophon being unconsciously the bearer of his own death warrant, the expression "Bellerophontic letters" arose, to describe any species of communication which a person is made the bearer of, containing matter prejudicial to himself.

Pegasus Yunan mitolojisi'nde kanatlı at.

What an interesting contribution to the theme

thanks,

Hello Alaettin,
Nice photo of the six dancing flames. I like the fact that you include the vegetation in the top layer. The blurred foreground rock has the effect of creating much depth & taking you straight to the line of flames. I enjoy the story from the Greek mythology ... I always get the names and characters mixed up and thanks for reminding. Regards. Latiff.

Interesting story behind this image. I wonder what it is that makes these flames re-apear. What lies underneth the eath at thsi place. Perhaps it is as your story tells...

Wow, I there is natural gas liking all the time, or is it something else? Interesting mythological story. The cultural things and from nature we learn from this site amaze me. Good colors. Nice framing. TFS

Hi Alaettin,
Niceshot and an interesting note, I guess it must be natural gas seeping from the rock, interesting that it reignites when extinguished.
Well done
Regards Andy

Merhaba Alaettin abi.

Yasin.

And I thought you had added the fire, Alaettin :)) What an interesting story behind it, I had not known it. It made me look at the image a second time wondering HOW this can be.
Thank you for sharing and have a good Sunday! - Cordelia :))
PS: I would have cropped the photo a bit at the bottom in order to get rid of some of the out-of-focus rock on the RH side.
