Orchis is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). This genus gets its name from the Greek όρχις orchis, meaning "testicle", from the appearance of the paired subterranean tuberoids. They occur mainly in Europe, NW Africa, and it stretches as far Tibet, Mongolia, China and Japan. These terrestrial orchids have tubers instead of pseudobulbs. They are extremely diverse in appearance. They produce an erect stem. The inflorescence is a cylindrical to globular spike 5 - 15 cm long with yellow, red to purple flowers. They start flowering at the base, slowly progressing upwards (except the Monkey orchid, Orchis simia that flowers in reverse order).

Anatolian Orchid occurrs in a great variety of colour forms. It flowers from March to May. A rather delicate-looking species with a loose flower spike of pinkish flowers with large lips and long prominent spurs; reaching 30 cm in height. Its dried powdered roots is used on the preparation of a Turkish traditional drink, called as “Salep”, mixing with sugar and milk.

This species is distributed in Anatolia –mainly Aegean, Mediterranean and SE Anatolian Regions-, S Greek Aegean Islands, Cyprus, Mediterranean ecozone of Syria, Lebanon, Israel, N. Iraq and NW Iran. It is related to O. quadripunctata but differs in having larger flowers with an elongate labellum and longer spur. The labellum usually has many spots and lines along the centre part, in contrast to O. quadripunctata. O. anatolica normally has a downwards-directed labellum.
