| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
In Turkey military service is obligatory for all the men who're healthy and aged at least 20.If you have some acceptable reasons or continue studying at a university, then u might wear the uniform later.
But in case you couldn't get your report as a healthy one, then u have no possibility to wear it.It's very important to do that service for a man, especially if he's living at the rural parts of Anatolia.Indeed it's very hard for them to have a marriage there, just because he couldn't perform his military service. And it's always a prolonging wish & curiosity in themselves how their appearances would be in those dresses, uniforms.
Since nearly five years,Turkish General Staff started a program at some garrisons to hug those disabled boys with their families, and shorten the gap(if there is) between the people and the armed forces. These disabled boys are taken into service just for one day,and certificated afterwards. In the morning they're welcomed and get their haircut in a discipline, they wear the uniforms, they have the meal altogether with their families at the saloon, get their weapons for some exercise and fast-training for the ceremony(how to walk-where to stand-which way to turn etc.) in the late afternoon. And at the big ceremony, they repeat some words, give some promises and certificated by the commanders at the open buffet with their families. They are permitted to keep the uniforms with them at their home and everytime they look at the dresses, they will memorize every tiny details of that day. From now on,it is an unforgettable day in their lives for any of them.
Turkish General Staff realizes this performance at May during The Week For Disabled Persons as a partial ceremony every year.
We have seen this boy at the past posts of this theme (P II and P IV) and now after a long wait at the line for the meal,we see there stayed none for him, like every other thing in the life. Why they should always accept the rest part of the life, can't we try to start WITH them.
(actually I took this pic while he was still waiting on the line and surely he has eaten but I wanted to use the pic to carry my thoughts to you and written the last paragraph.I think ,they can and should share the life with us;not waiting aside to accept what we propose for them. |

photo suberbe avec un sujet difficile ! ce pauvre garcon semble completement désemparé !
Hi Nejat,
I've been seeing your series about the "Soldier for 1 day" and, as you've been posting several photos on the same theme I will make a "big" comment about them. First of all, the pictures are excelent and really show a very special moment for those men.
Then it's touching that the Military volunteer to make this celebration, since it must make those who are out of the system proud of themselves and of their country even if for a day.
Very well done series in such a delicate matter that is disability.
Take care, Stef
I like you soldier series very much. Your notes also help a lot in understanding the story behind the picture. Very well done.
