Polyommatus icarus (Common Blue) [in Turk. Çok Gözlü Mavi] (Male)

Yesterday I have uploaded a “female common blue” butterfly from Erdemli (Mersin province), and today a “male” one which I captured during our Mediterranean Anatolian region trip of 2009.

TFL and have a nice WE!
Cheers,

A small butterfly with a wingspan of 20-32 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is bright blue with a thin black line along the margin and a white outer margin, The underside ground colour is grey with blue-green highlights in the basal area. On the forewing and hindwing, parallel with the outer margin, is a series of black marks outlined with white. Similar markings are present in the cell and within the discal and basal areas of the forewing and hindwing. In the submarginal area there is a series of joined, orange, triangular-shaped marks. The upperside ground colour of the female is brown with a series of orange submarginal marks. On the forewing there is a small black mark at the end of the cell. The underside ground colour is light grey-brown. The markings are similar to the underside markings of the male. In females of the first brood there are mauve highlights on the uppersides, which in some specimens completely replaces the brown colour.

Common blue is a wide-ranging species which flies throughout all Europe, North Africa and all of western and central Asia. In Cyprus, the adult butterflies start to emerge at the end of February and are on the wing until the beginning of December in successive, overlapping broods. Overwinters as a pupa. The recorded host-plants are various species of the Leguminosae family. In Cyprus, it has been recorded as laying on various species of Trifolium and Lotus, on Ononis spinosa (Spiny Rest-harrow) and Medicago sativa (Lucerne). The larvae are attended by ants whilst developing on the host-plant.

It is one of the most common and most widespread butterflies in Cyprus. Recorded in a wide variety of habitats, such as maquis, garigue, phrygana, agricultural land, river valleys and forests, from sea level to the higest point of Cyprus. It is a very common butterfly wherever Lucerne is grown. Observed to be attracted to a wide variety of flowers.

Hi Bayram,
An amazing macro of this common blue butterfly!
Lighting is marvelous and the shallow DOF is just accurate!
Fabulous details can be noticed on the body of the insect and the lower part of the wings.
Great natural colors very neatly presented.
Best regards,

Francis Xavier

Merhaba Bayram,

You have a fine portfolio of butterflies and this must be one of your best.
Your sharp focus has captured this example with great details. The characteristic furry body looks deep and velvety whilst the wings, with their delicate veins, seem almost transparent.
Fine off-centre composition.

Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Oh wow, the wings are semi-transparent and very sharp. It contrasts well with the blonde b/g. I have not seen this beautiful species and I thank you Bayram for posting this. Best regards my friend.
