Good anticipation, but depth of field (sharpness in front and behind to the focused element or subject) was nowhere to be visible. I hope the posting was a little bit bigger so it can easily be seen.
To prevent out of focus subjects at least your aperture should be f/4.0,once you are in perfect control of the situation then its safe to use f/1.8,it takes time and patience.
What was your ISO, using 400 or 800 are the safest, since they are perfect for sports and noise are acceptable.
If you have the proper lens like telephoto, then its no problem of taking photos much closer. But if you don't have one yet, cropping by photo editing or post processing will do the trick but to a certain limit.
For the meantime WELCOME man. Enjoy your stay here.
Thanks,
Jeffrey

You need tighter focus on the action you captued it. Higher ISO to get tigher focus also know AF zoom better.
